Summary

Description
English: Burnt screw terminal. As you can see, workers with certificate also can make mistakes.
  • What was the mistake?
  • -Previous qualified specialist had connected old aluminium cable to new copper cable inside screw terminals. After the washing machine worked for six months with this connection, a burning smell became evident inside the apartment. When the apartment owner called me, I hadn't seen such a method of wiring!
  • What was the reason?
  • -There was fresh spackling paste and paint in the stairs, but the electrician didn't want to break into the freshly filled walls to put in a new cable. He left old the aluminium cable between the distribution board and junction box inside the apartment.

How I solved that problem:

  • Step 1:

It was quite a dangerous operation. I didn't want to break through the wall in the stairs by drilling too long a hole (~30cm) between the apartment and distribution board. When my drill bit got to 25cm, I was sweating, because I was fearful of contacting the phase wires with my drill bit. It took me about two hours to drill the last 5 cm and I was sweating the entire time. Fortunately the hole was drilled correctly and no "live" wires were caught by my drill bit.

  • Step 2:

After installing the fuse box, I connected the phase wire into the main circuit breaker and switched the electricity on. It is now working!
