No, it's a northern leopard frog, Rana pipiens, in Burleigh County, North Dakota. I often rescue frogs and salamanders from a local bait shop when they accidentally come in with their minnows. The northern leopard frog produces specific ribonucleases in its oocytes (immature egg cell). Those enzymes are potential drugs for cancer. One such molecule called ranpirnase (onconase) is in clinical trials as a treatment for mesothelioma and lung tumors. Another called amphinase was recently described as a potential treatment for brain tumors. |
