The AEW International Championship is a professional wrestling championship in All Elite Wrestling (AEW). It is a secondary championship in the men's division of AEW. The championship is allowed to be fought for in other wrestling companies.[1]
History
[change | change source]The title was introduced as the AEW All-Atlantic Championship on the June 8, 2022 episode of Dynamite by commentator Tony Schiavone. He said that it represents the AEW fans watching in over 130 countries. He also revealed there would be a tournament to become the first champion.[2]
The first champion was Pac. He defeated Clark Connors, Miro, and Malakai Black in a four-way match at Forbidden Door.
AEW changed the name to AEW International Championship on March 15, 2023. They said this was a new championship and said that then-champion Orange Cassidy was the final All-Atlantic Champion and the first International Champion. They later changed this and said that Cassidy's reign was the same reign for both names.[3]
At Dynamite: Blood & Guts on July 24, 2024, reigning champion Maxwell Jacob Friedman (MJF) unofficially renamed the title to AEW American Championship. He also introduced his own title belt design that features the colors of the American flag.[4] It was changed back to the International Championship after he lost the title.
Right now the champion is Konosuke Takeshita, who is in his first reign. He defeated previous champion Will Ospreay and Ricochet in a three-way match at WrestleDream on October 12, 2024, in Tacoma, Washington.[5]
