Alfons Verplaetse

Alfons "Fons" Remi Emiel Viscount Verplaetse (19 February 1930 – 15 October 2020) was a Belgian economist. He was Governor of the National Bank of Belgium (NBB) from 1989 until 1999. He was one of the main people that helped the creation Belgian Frank in 1982.[1] He worked at the cabinet of Wilfried Martens. Verplaetse was born in Zulte, Belgium.

Verplaetse died of COVID-19 on 15 October 2020 in Brussels, aged 90.[2][3]
