The Battle of Khwakurk led by Massoud Barzani with his Peshmerga forces clashed with the Baathist Iraqi soldiers in Khwakurk in 1988, the Baathist Iraqi soldiers used chemical weapons and had air support and up to 20,000-30,000 soldiers, they had wanted to capture this point because of the strategic position of Khwakurk, it was surrounded by Iran, Turkey, and Syria, The Kurds had up to 2,000-3,000 Soldiers with no air support with no tank and only foot soldiers that entered the war from Iran, the Peshmerga were victorious in this battle and thwarted the attempt of baathists trying to take Khwakurk.
