Clara Isabel Alegría Vides[1] (May 12, 1924 – January 25, 2018) was a Nicaraguan poet, essayist, novelist, and journalist. She was a major voice in the literature of contemporary Central America. She wrote under the pseudonym Claribel Alegría.[2] She was awarded the 2006 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. Her first book, Anillo de Silencio (Ring of Silence) was published in 1948. She retired in 2003.

Alegría later lived in Managua, Nicaragua. She died on 25 January 2018, aged 93.[3]
