Democratic Left Alliance

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) is a Polish centre-left political party founded on 15 April 1999 (registered by the court on 17 May 1999) by activists from most of the organisations that were part of the SLD coalition. This coalition was centred around the Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland party and was established in 1991.

In 1993–1997, the SLD coalition formed a majority government with the Polish People's Party, and its prime ministers were Józef Oleksy (1995–1996) and Włodzimierz Cimoszewicz (1996–1997). The SLD party formed a government in 2001–2005 (a majority government until 2003, a coalition with the PSL and the Labour Union; since 2003 a minority government with some left-wing groups). The party's prime ministers were Leszek Miller (2001–2004) and Marek Belka (2004–2005). In the years 1995–2005, Aleksander Kwaśniewski, who came from the SLD coalition, served as the President of the Republic of Poland.

Since 2005, the SLD has been in opposition (until 2015 and since 2019, parliamentary, and extra-parliamentary in the years 2015–2019). The Democratic Left Alliance was a member of, among others, the Party of European Socialists, and also belonged to the Socialist International. In the European Parliament, it belonged to the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats. The party's ideology was derived from the social democratic trend[1].

In connection with the plans to merge with Wiosna, the SLD formally adopted the name Nowa Lewica, registered on 27 January 2020. The party's abbreviation was not changed by the court at that time. On June 11, 2021, as a result of the dissolution of Wiosna and the declaration of accession to the New Left by its activists, the two groups actually merged. On July 17, 2021, the SLD and Wiosna factions were formally established within the New Left. On October 9, 2021, a congress was held that sealed the process of merging both groups through a parity election of authorities.
