Guilt (law)

In criminal law, a person is guilty if a court has decided they have done something illegal. For instance, if a person has broken a law by theft, he or she is guilty of a crime.

A person is guilty if a court decides him or her to be, i.e. if the court blames them for doing something wrong. A guilty person is punished. The punishment is called sentence.
