Hainaut [4] (French: Hainaut, Dutch: Henegouwen, German: Hennegau, Picard: Hénau, Walloon: Hinnot, West Flemish: Enegouwn) is a province of the Walloon Region, one of the three regions of Belgium. Its capital is the city of Mons.
It is the westernmost province of the Walloon Region.
Geography
[change | change source]To the south of the province of Hainaut lies the French Nord department, while within Belgium it borders (clockwise from the North) on the Flemish provinces of West Flanders, East Flanders, Flemish Brabant and the Wallonian provinces of Walloon Brabant and Namur.
The province has an area of 3,813 square kilometres (1,472 square miles) with a population of about 1,351,000 in 2022. It is the province of the Walloon Region with the highest population.
The province of Hainaut is divided into seven arrondissements (arrondissementen in Dutch) with 69 municipalities.
The altitude of the province is between 10 metres (32.8 feet), in Celles, and 365 metres (1,197.5 feet), in L'Escaillère.
