Hazel W. Johnson-Brown (October 10, 1927[1] – August 5, 2011) a member of the United States military. She was the 16th Chief of the United States Army Nurse Corps[2] and the first African American woman to hold the title of Brigadier general.[3] She served the military as a nurse from 1955 to 1983 when she retired.[4]
The title of Brigadier general and 16th Chief of Army Nurse Corps was awarded to Hazel W. Johnson-Brown in 1979.[2][4]
Early life
[change | change source]She was born on October 10, 1927.[1] She was born and raised in Pennsylvania, United States. She is the daughter of Clarence L. Johnson Sr. and Gamett Henly Johnson.[1] She had six siblings.[2] It is said that she wanted to be a nurse from early childhood.[2]
