Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia or sesquipedalophobia (for short) is the fear of long words. The word is mostly a joke from the fact that it's a long word itself.[1] The phobia is the third longest word in the English language after the scientific name for titin and pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.[2]

The American Psychiatric Association does not officially recognise this phobia. Instead, hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is considered a social phobia. However, there is not much evidence people actually have it. [3]
