Ismail Kadare (Albanian: [ismaˈil kadaˈɾe], also spelled Kadaré; 28 January 1936 – 1 July 2024) was an Albanian novelist and poet. He was known for writing short stories until the publication of his first novel, The General of the Dead Army.
In 1996, he became a lifetime member of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences of France. In 2005, he won the first Man Booker International Prize and in 2016, he was Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur recipient.
Some have said that Kadare should have won the Nobel Prize in Literature. His works have been published in about 30 languages.
Kadare died of a heart attack on 1 July 2024 in Tirana, Albania at the age of 88.[4]
