Johann Riegler (born July 17, 1929 in Vienna; † September 8, 2011) was an Austrian footballer. He played as midfielder mainly for SK Rapid Wien. He also played for the Austrian national football team.
Career
[change | change source]Riegler began his football career at SV Eis. One year later he moved to the youth team of FC Wien. There he made his debut on October 1st, 1944 at the age of 15. It was necessary because some players were not allowed to play by the Luftwaffe. The match was against Wiener Sport-Club. [1] In 1948, he moved to SK Rapid Wien. There he played from 1948 to 1958. During this time, he became Austrian champion five times.
After three years at Rapid's local rivals FK Austria Wien, he moved to France. He played for RC Lens for two seasons. After returning from France, he ended his career at SK Austria Klagenfurt and SV Raxwerke Admira-Josefstadt.
International
[change | change source]He debuted on 27 May 1951 in a 4-0 win versus Scotland . His last match was on 27 March 1955 in a 2-3 loss versus Czechoslovakia . Riegler was part of the Austrian national team squad for the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. He was not used there. [2]
