Josef Karl Frühwirth (29 May 1907 – 18 January 1944 near Kalikhovo, Soviet Union [1]) was an Austrian football player. With SK Rapid the midfielder became Austrian Champion twice. He also played one match for the Austrian national football team.

Josef Frühwirth played his first championship match for SK Rapid Wien in the 1927-28 season. In the following season he made regular appearances in the first team and was able to win the championship title with Rapid. In the following season, Hütteldorf won the championship again, but Frühwirth was unable to secure a regular place. He left the club at the end of the season. He joined SC Wacker Wien. In 1932 he moved to the newly promoted FC Libertas Wien. With this team he played in the top division for four years. In 1936 he accepted a contract with SK Sturm Graz.

He then worked as a player-coach at CA Spora Luxembourg and won the national championship in 1938. After his return to Austria he played for Floridsdorfer AC and again for Sturm Graz.

On 7 October 1928, he made his only appearance for the national team in the 5:1 victory against Hungary. [2]

He was killed in early 1944 on the Eastern Front in Kalikhovo in what is now Russia.
