Biography
[change | change source]Kyung Wha Chung was born in Seoul, South Korea. After starting the piano at age 4, she started the violin at age 7. She performed the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto at age 9 with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. She was viewed as a child progidy, due to her talent at such a young age. She won many of the national competitions in South Korea. At age 13, Chung and her family moved to the United States to further her musical education.[1] Later Chung would study under Joseph Szigeti in Europe.
Chung began performing in concert halls in the U.S. such as with the New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony Orchestra.[2] She substituted for violinists Itzhak Perlman and Nathan Milstein, which were significant opportunities. Chung received internal recognition with her debut album with André Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra. Since then she recorded dozens of albums with Decca and EMI and has played in concert halls around the world.
Since 2007 Chung has been a teacher at the Juilliard School.[3]
