Lara-El (née Lara Lor-Van) is a fictional character who appears in Superman comics published by DC Comics. The character was created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, first appearing in the Superman newspaper comic strip in 1939.

Fictional character biography

Lara is the biological mother of Superman, and the wife of scientist Jor-El. She and her husband placed their son in a spaceship in order to be sent to Earth moments before their planet Krypton was destroyed in a natural cataclysm.

Susannah York portrays Lara in the 1978 movie Superman, the 1980 movie Superman II, and the 1987 movie Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Lara was played by Ayelet Zurer in the 2013 Superman movie Man of Steel. Mariana Klaveno portrayed the character in the second season of the television series Superman & Lois.
