Luigi Nicholas Mangione (born May 6, 1998) is an American man who is the suspected killer of Brian Thompson, the CEO of United Healthcare.
Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9, 2024.[1] He appeared in a federal court in New York City on December 19.[2] On December 23, Mangione pleaded not guilty to his state murder charges. Mangione has been indicted on eleven state charges and faces four federal charges.[3][4] The federal murder by firearm charge makes him eligible for the death penalty.[5]
Since his arrest, Mangione has received support online. Some have called him a folk hero.[6] The support for Mangione is connected with the public's view of the health insurance industry and the unfair claim denial practices that insurances do.[7][8] The case has spurred growing calls for health insurance reform.[9]
