The Malleco Province (Spanish: Provincia de Malleco) is one of two provinces of the Chilean region of Araucanía (IX). The provincial capital is the city of Angol.
Geography
[change | change source]The Malleco province is in the northern half of the Araucanía region with an area of 13,433.3 sq mi (34,792 km2).[2] The capital, Temuco, is in the northwestern part of the province.
Malleco is bordered to the north by the Bío Bío provinces, to the east by Argentina, to the south by the Cautín province and to the west by the Arauco province.

Climate
[change | change source]The average amount of precipitation for the year in Angol-Los Estanques, at an altitude of 72 m (236 ft), is 1,094.8 mm (43.1 in). The month with the most precipitation on average is July with 238.6 mm (9.4 in) of precipitation. The month with the least precipitation on average is February with an average of 12 mm (0.5 in).[3]
Population
[change | change source]As of 2002[update] (last national census), there were 201,615 people living in the province, giving it a population density of 15.0 inhabitants/km².[2] The urban population was 139,261 persons (69% of the total population).
The largest city of the province, in 2002, is its capital, Angol, with 43,801 inhabitants.
Administration
[change | change source]As a province, Malleco is a second-level administrative division, consisting of 11 communes (comunas). The city of Angol serves as the provincial capital. The province is administered by a governor.
