Markus Steinhöfer (born March 7, 1986 in Weissenburg) is a former German football player. He played as defender.
Career[change | change source]
Steinhöfer started playing football at DSC Weißenburg. Then he went to the the youth department of 1. FC Nürnberg via TSV Roth. In 2002 he joined the B-Juniors of FC Bayern Munich. After a year he moved up to the A-youth . With the team he became German A-junior champion. 2004 he made his first appearances for the FC Bayern amateur team in the third-class Regionalliga South and became . In the following season he moved up to the amateur squad. Then he was loaned to the Austrian Bundesliga club Red Bull Salzburg in the summer of 2006. [1] In the spring of 2007 he got a regular place in the first squad. With the team he became Austrian champions.
In the summer of 2008 he moved back to Germany. He joined Eintracht Frankfurt. He was able to quickly establish himself in the team as a midfielder. At the end of the season he had played in 32 of the 34 league games, scoring three goals and assisting ten. Because a new coach came he was loaned out to second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern for the second half of the 2009/10 season.
At the end of January 2011 he moved to Swiss champions and cup winners FC Basel. [2] He was an immediate regular there. In the league FC Basel lost only one game in the second half of the season. They defended the championship title with a one-point lead over FC Zurich.[3] The 2011/12 season was even more successful for FC Basel. Steinhöfer as a regular player. They won the cup and the championship. At the end of the 2012/13 season, Steinhöfer became Swiss champions for the third time with FC Basel. In the 2012/13 Europa League he made it to the semi-finals with FC Basel.
For the 2013/14 season he moved to the Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla. In 2014 he returned to Germany and signed a contrract with second division club TSV 1860 Munich. On February 1, 2015, he dissolved the contract. He signed with VfR Aalen. After VfR Aalen was relegated to the 3rd league, Steinhöfer signed a contract with Czech side Sparta Prague. In January 2017 he signed a contract with SV Darmstadt 98. He then moved to VfB Eichstätt in the Bavarian Regional Football League in September 2018. The reason for this was the birth of his daughter. He ended his career after the 2018/19 season.
