Mikheil Kavelashvili (Georgian: მიხეილ ყაველაშვილი; born 1971) is a Georgian politician and former professional footballer. He is the 6th and current President of Georgia after the disputed 2024 presidential election. He was elected to the Parliament of Georgia in the Georgian Dream party.

Before entering politics, he was a striker who played in the English Premier League for Manchester City and in the Swiss Super League for Grasshoppers, Zürich, Luzern, Sion, Aarau and Basel.

He also played for Dinamo Tbilisi and Spartak Vladikavkaz. He played 46 times for Georgia national football team from 1991 to 2002.

On 27 November 2024, the ruling Georgian Dream party nominated Kavelashvili as its candidate for the Presidency of Georgia.[3] On 14 December 2024, he was controversially elected in a process that has been called "illegitimate" and boycotted by the opposition.[4][5]

  1. Kavelashvili's election is contested by outgoing President Salome Zourabichvili, all large opposition parties, as well as numerous watchdogs and constitutional experts, who question the legitimacy of the 2024 Georgian parliamentary election that determined the composition of the electoral collage for the presidential election.
