Nairobi DusitD2 complex attack

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A terrorist attack began on 15 January 2019 and finished on 16 January 2019 in the Westlands area of Nairobi, Kenya. The incident began at 14:30 on 15 January, and ended a few minutes to ten the following day.[1]

Initial reports were of gunfire and two explosions at the hotel. By 16 January 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta said that 14 people had been killed, including all the terrorists.[2] Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement that was released during the attack.[3] Mohammed Gichunge was the shooter but was quickly shot down by Kenya's Rekke Squad - an equivalent to America's SWAT. His accomplice and girlfriend fled to Somalia. The hotel was reopened in August.
