National Liberation Army (Colombia)
Appearance
The National Liberation Army is a guerrilla insurgency group[1] involved in the continuing Colombian conflict,[2] which has existed in Colombia since 1964. The ELN supports a combination of communist ideology of Marxism–Leninism and liberation theology. In 2013, it was estimated that the ELN forces had about 1,380 and 3,000 guerrillas.[3][4][5] According to former ELN national directorate member Felipe Torres, one-fifth of ELN supporters are armed.[6] The ELN has been classified as a terrorist organization by the governments of Colombia,[7] the United States,[8] Canada,[9] New Zealand,[10] and the European Union.[11]
