Raid on Ottoman trading routes

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

After the victory of the Ottomans, a peace treaty was concluded between the Yazidis and the Ottomans. However, this did not last long. As early as 1640, Ottoman troops attacked the Yazidis in Shingal.

A few years earlier, the Yazidis in Shingal, among other things, succeeded in defeating the Ottoman commander Nasuh Pasha and, according to the military reports of the Evliya Çelebi, to kill over 7,000 Ottoman soldiers. The Yazidis controlled all trade routes in Shingal and the surrounding area and were feared among the Muslims. They also refused to pay the taxes levied by the Ottomans and to submit to them completely. The Yazidis also attacked Ottoman columns of goods without fear and plundered them.

This prompted the governor of Diyarbekir, Melek Ahmad Pasha, who was known for his hostility to Yazidis, to besiege Shingal with 70,000 soldiers. He called on the Yazidis to return the stolen goods and to pay the taxes due. The Yazidis decided to retreat to the mountains and resist. It came to war. Despite the superiority of 70,000 soldiers, the Ottomans had to accept bitter losses before they could conquer the battle-hardened Yazidis in the mountains.[5]
