Renato Tirso Antonio Coronado Corona[1] (October 15, 1948 – April 29, 2016) was a Filipino jurist. He was the 23rd Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines. He served as chief from 2010 until his resignation in 2012.
Early life
[change | change source]Corona was born on October 15, 1948 in the Santa Ana area of Manila. He studied at Ateneo de Manila University, at Harvard University and at the University of Santo Tomas.
Career
[change | change source]He served as an Associate Justice after being appointed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on April 9, 2002. He was appointed as Chief Justice on May 12, 2010 after the retirement of Chief Justice Reynato Puno.
Corona was a law professor and member of the Cabinet under two Presidents, Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, before being appointed to the court.
Impeachment
[change | change source]On December 12, 2011, he was impeached by the House of Representatives.[2] On May 29, 2012, he was found guilty by the Senate of violating some laws of the Constitution of the Philippines. He resigned as a result.[3]
Death
[change | change source]Corona died on April 29, 2016 at The Medical City in Pasig due to complications of a heart attack, aged 67.[4] He suffered from kidney disease.
