Saarijärvi is a city in central Finland. The municipalities next to it are Kannonkoski, Karstula, Multia, Soini, Uurainen, Ähtäri and Äänekoski.

Saarijärvi has been city since 1986. However, there have been people living here for 6,000 years. In 1749, Vanha Saarijärvi had populatoin of 1,380. Its population was the largest in 1870 when there were 14,000 living there.

The neighboring municipality of Pylkönmäki was merged with Saarijärvi in 2009.
