Talk:Book of Genesis
The concept of "Universe" was probably alien to whomever really wrote the Bible. More likely they were just describing the creation of the world. — This unsigned comment was added by 74.116.127.11 (talk • changes) on 19:22, 15 September 2006 (UTC).
The number of clean animals brought onto the Ark
[change source]We are disagreeing how many animals of each clean/kosher species were brought onto the ark.
- I (special:contribs/Kk.urban) think it's 14.
- The IP user (special:contribs/184.148.237.153) thinks it's 7.
The IP user has provided a link to Genesis 7:2 in the King James Version: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis%207&version=KJV, which reads "Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female, and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female."
However, I believe that this is meant to be 7 pairs, not 7 animals, because most of the other Bible translations say 7 pairs. Note also that the KJV version uses plural on "by sevens" but singular on "by to". To me, this means we can't be sure they mean "7 animals total".
The IP user also provided a link to a Jewish website: https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/246609/jewish/The-Story-of-Noah-and-the-Ark-in-the-Bible.htm
This is a summary of the Bible passage, which includes "Joining them in the ark would be a select few creatures of every species (other than fish, that survived the Flood unscathed): two from every non-kosher animal, and seven (or fourteen) of every kosher animal."
Given that they say "seven (or fourteen)", there seems to be some controversy. There is a footnote on the word "fourteen" which links to another translation, which reads "Of all the clean animals you shall take for yourself seven pairs, a male and its mate".
Finally, the English Wikipedia article Noach says: "God told Noah to go into the Ark with his household, and to take seven pairs of every clean animal and every bird, and two pairs of every other animal, to keep their species alive."
