Merge with global warming

[change source]

Hi all. Climate change and global warming are the same page on the English Wikipedia, so why not here? I think we can agree that these two terms mean similar things. Discuss more below... Belwine💬📜 22:41, 8 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Belwine: Do you think it's a good time to merge the articles together? --Cuddles9999💬📜 14:38, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Cuddles9999: I might do it later. It would take a while though! —Belwine (talk) 14:56, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • As the title says, "Climate change" is not just about what is happening now. It is a feature of Earth history, and we know a great deal about it.
@Belwine: Ok. Thanks for letting me know. --Cuddles9999💬📜 15:11, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I think as these are quite large articles, it'd be better there for to be more discussion first. You are the only person who has responded to my comment since I posted it in early January —Belwine (talk) 15:12, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. After long discussions, the content on the topics of 'global warming' and 'climate change' were consolidated into a single article, with GW now being a mere re-direct to CC. The two concepts are closely intertwined, with many thinking that GW is a subset of CC. In any event, the term GW is used less and less by reliable sources, and the main CC article now deals with the distinction in its 'Terminology' section. These things strongly favor merging the two articles here into a single article with the broader title, "Climate change". RCraig09 (talk) 18:02, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support We could move the page about climate change to climate variability and change, just like happened on the English Wikipedia. Femkemilene (talk) 20:56, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, they do not mean the same thing. Global warming is just one type of climate change. It just happens to be what is happening at present. For most of human history the world climate has been an ice age! The climate on Earth has always been changing, and so is a much broader concept than global warming. And, decisions for this wiki need to be taken by its regular editors. Macdonald-ross (talk) 21:46, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Since I made this request in a rush nearly three months ago, soon after I joined simple, I should probably clear a few things up.
They do not mean the same things, they mean similar things, and when talking about this article, it is only really talking about global warming right now. So the article should talk about climate change in general for it to be a separate topic, or it can be merged.
Secondly, enwiki merged Climate change and Global warming and w:Climate variability and change is used for the change of climate in general.
Obviously though, we can do it differently, because we are not enwiki. --Belwine (talk) 20:44, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support because young people like Teach the Future usually talk about "climate change" not "global warming". But I am not here often so it would be good to hear other people's ideas. Chidgk1 (talk) 18:16, 10 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment I see Cuddles9999 has been blocked, and maybe nobody else will say anything about this. If we don't agree to merge I like what Femkemilene said about not merging but moving climate change to climate variability and change. Can we do that and then move global warming to climate change? As Macdonald-ross and Belwine write most on this Wikipedia maybe they should decide? Chidgk1 (talk) 11:33, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Because the Earth's climate has always been changing, that fact needs to be clearly distinguished from the present rise in temperature. It is not acceptable for the wiki to change its balance on this issue. It needs to have pages which deal with the broader issue of climate change. It would need those pages even if Earth's global temperature was going down. Macdonald-ross (talk) 08:39, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose I came across the fact that we have two pages for these two different topic unlike enwiki a long time ago. However, to me these things have enough differences to have individual pages. Climate change has been an issue since ancient times, while global warming can focus on current scenarios. I think it will be more simple to distinguish these two topics.-BRP ever 10:17, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Observation: What opposers do not appear to appreciate is that when people search for "climate change" or for "global warming" they almost always are looking for Earth's recent warming, not the planet's natural historical variability over millennia. The fact that the public (that is, our readers) usually uses "global warming" and "climate change" interchangeably, is a main reason why en.wikipedia moved the broader concept to "Climate variability and change" and made "global warming" a redirect to the "Climate change" article. This reasoning supports similar action here, starting with a merge of CC and GW. RCraig09 (talk) 05:39, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
They are basically the same thing but I don't know what wikipedia says about that but OK. Snowy Cotton Candy (talk) 05:41, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Should we change the name of this page?

[change source]

Macdonald-ross and Belwine and anyone else. What do you think about changing the name of this page so that we can change the name of Global warming to "climate change"? Chidgk1 (talk) 16:51, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll go so far as to say I don't oppose the change. I think for most people the rise in sea level will be more important than the warming itself, and the rise in population will long-term be even more important. Macdonald-ross (talk) 17:02, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You have changed the title to a version which has problems of length, redundancy, and is not simple. "Climate variability and change". Change is clear enough. Macdonald-ross (talk) 08:07, 10 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Macdonald-ross You are right - I agree a better title is needed. But not "Climate change" because I am trying to rename "global warming" to that. Can you suggest a better title? Maybe "Climate change before humans"? Also I don't understand how to delete the redirect https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard#Request_to_delete_redirect . So I cannot rename. Can you help?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Chidgk1 (talkcontribs) 13:57, 13 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Macdonald-ross or anyone. What do you think about the names of the pages? Also the administrators did not answer my question - do you have any idea? Chidgk1 (talk) 12:31, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the main topic of this article

[change source]

User:Chidgk1 has changed the intro so it starts by talking about the recent climate change, rather than climate change on the geological timescale. I think the structure was better before, because in this form, it duplicates global warming. What do other people think? Lights and freedom (talk) 03:56, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Like one of the points found in both the articles,

...humans burn coal, oil and natural gas, and cut down forests.

Maybe I agree with you @Lights and freedom. I think previous content was better than this one. I'm waiting for other's consent as well. -- DRC (User:TTP1233) (talk . e-mail . contrib) 04:08, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
At the moment this article is about all climate change at any time. But when most people search the internet for "climate change" they are searching for recent climate change. So I put that at the top so readers don't have to waste time reading the other stuff if they don't want to. If I have time I might write more details in the global warming article - then there will be less stuff which is the same as this article. The stuff about global warming in this article is just the most important things. Chidgk1 (talk) 08:45, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@TTP1233: Hello DRC - In British English we mostly talk about climate change meaning modern climate change - for example https://learnenglishteens.britishcouncil.org/topics/climate-change/term . I don't know how the words "global warming" and "climate change" are used in Indian English - can you explain? Chidgk1 (talk) 08:52, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Lights and freedom: Unfortunately you have put back in an incorrect sentence and a sentence with difficult words. I have tagged them. Please could you fix. Chidgk1 (talk) 06:24, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Macdonald-ross: I see you have cited a couple of books to say the last Ice Age ended ten thousand years ago. I am not an expert but as I understand it the last "glaciation" ended then and "glaciation" is not the same as "Ice Age". I don't know how to read those books online - so if that is not possible and I am wrong please could you add page number and quotation to the cite. I could not find a "request quotation" tag on this wiki. Chidgk1 (talk) 09:22, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Macdonald-ross: I think it's a problem that you removed the part about the volcanoes and historical higher temperatures. This should be included in the article somewhere. Because yes, there have been changes due to possible changes in the earth's orbit and changes in the sun. However, the changes due to other factors have been much bigger. The level of CO2 in the past was much much higher which affected the climate, and that was at least tens of millions of yeaars ago. Lights and freedom (talk) 14:42, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Scientists are not sure whether last Ice Age has finished

[change source]

Not surprising I am confused as it seems the scientists are not sure https://www.amnh.org/explore/ology/earth/ask-a-scientist-about-our-environment/how-did-the-ice-age-end

So do you think we should change the article? If so how? Chidgk1 (talk) 15:14, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This is no longer true. We head for even more warming and a higher water level. No-one thinks it is going the other way. Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:53, 27 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You are right that everyone knows the world is getting warmer. But we still have some ice, so maybe we are still in an ice age until more of it melts. Maybe we will only leave the Ice Age when the Arctic has all melted. Chidgk1 (talk) 16:18, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think this page should be called “Climate change before the year 1830”

[change source]

Because when most people talk about climate change they mean climate change which is happening now, the page which is now called global warming should be called “climate change” I think. Do you agree?

This page could be called “Climate change before the year 1830” unless anyone can think of a better name. Chidgk1 (talk) 18:50, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, most people would be thinking of changes after 1830, I think. Well, it's just not fair to say climate now is getting warmer without mentioning that, long term, it has been both warmer and colder in Earth history. And it has been a lot warmer and a lot colder!
