[change source]In January 2011, Minamisanriku was officially known as a town; but since its total destruction in the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami it has not yet recovered.
For now, Minamisanriku can be fairly described as a "town" and as a "non-town" (municipality). For this practical reason, it is in two categories:
