Dr. Leonard Hofstadter (from New Jersey) and Dr. Sheldon Cooper (from Texas) are physicists. In the first episode, Penny moves to the apartment across the hall from them. Penny is a waitress from Nebraska. Leonard wants to start a relationship with her but she wants to be friends.

Howard Wolowitz is an engineer. He enjoys sex but does not want a relationship. Dr. Raj Koothrappali is an astrophysicist from India. He has selective mutism — he cannot talk to women.

Sheldon and Leonard have a new neighbor called Penny. Leonard likes her but Sheldon does not. Leonard invites Penny to have lunch. She asks to use his shower, because her shower is broken. After her shower, she meets Howard and Raj. Howard tries to flirt with her. Raj is not able to speak to her.

Penny asks Leonard to get her television from her ex-boyfriend Kurt. But Kurt is a bully and takes off Leonard and Sheldon's pants. Penny feels bad and goes to dinner with the guys.

Furniture comes from Penny in the mail. Leonard and Sheldon move it to her apartment. Sheldon sees Penny's apartment is untidy. This makes him very unhappy. He cannot sleep and goes into her apartment at night. He cleans and organizes it.

Penny is very angry at Sheldon. He tries to apologize but makes her more upset. Penny talks to Raj and forgives Sheldon.

Leonard sees Penny kissing a man. He asks out a woman called Leslie but she does not like him. Leonard becomes unhappy and Sheldon tells him that Penny did not actually reject him. Leonard asks Penny to go to dinner with him and she does. But Penny does not know it is a date and thinks Sheldon, Howard and Raj will be there.

Leonard lies and tells Penny that the others will not be able to come to the meal. Leonard has fun but then he hurts himself by banging his head on the table. Penny takes him home.

Sheldon is fired when he insults his new boss, Dr. Eric Gablehauser. Sheldon tries to find a new job. He tries to improve scrambled eggs, make luminous fish and buys a loom.

Leonard is concerned and talks to Sheldon's mother, Mary. She is a devout Christian and comes over to comfort Sheldon. She makes him apologize to Dr. Gablehauser. Mary is a widow and flirts with Dr. Gablehauser. Because of this, Sheldon gets his job back.

Penny works at the Cheesecake Factory. Her friends go there to eat. They meet Leslie Winkle (Sara Gilbert). She is in a string quartet and they need a new cellist. Leonard plays the cello and joins the quartet. They practice in his apartment. After, Leslie and Leonard have sex.

Sheldon and Penny find out that Leslie and Leonard have had sex. Sheldon is not happy but Penny is. Leonard talks to Leslie about their relationship. Leonard wants a long term relationship. Leslie wants a one-night stand. They break up

Penny invites her friends to her Halloween party. They are not very happy. Howard goes as Robin Hood but looks like Peter Pan. Sheldon goes as the Doppler effect but people do not understand it. Raj cannot speak to women.

Kurt is Penny's ex-boyfriend. He is at the party. He is very rude to Leonard. Leonard goes home. Later, Penny talks to him. They kiss.

Penny's friend Christy (Brooke D'Orsay) is in town. Christy sleeps with Howard. Penny has to sleep in Sheldon and Leonard's apartment.

Howard and Christy are in a relationship. Sheldon is unhappy, because he does not like change. Christy has an argument with Howard's mother. Howard and Christy break up
