The My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic universe is a fictional universe that originated with My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, a 2010–2019 animated children's television series. The universe primarily takes place in the country of Equestria and is populated by fantasy races such as ponies, dragons, griffons, zebras, buffalos, yaks, hippogriffs, and others.

History of Greater Equestria

The history of Greater Equestria spans thousands of years and deals with the development of various civilizations, the most notable of which being Equestria, but notable others being the Crystal Empire, Yakyakistan, the Dragon Lands, the Griffon Kingdom, Hippogriffia, and Seaquestria. Dates in Equestria are marked as being a certain number of years before or after Princess Celestia banished Nightmare Moon to the Moon. Years before Nightmare Moon are denoted as BNM and years after Nightmare Moon are denoted as ANM.

The Era of Disunity was an era of ancient history in Greater Equestria that spanned a millennium, lasting from 2000 to 1000 years before Nightmare Moon. The era began when the ram Grogar proclaimed himself the Emperor of Equestria and created monsters to besiege the land, thus beginning the Epoch of Darkness. The Epoch of Darkness ended when a unicorn named Gusty the Great led a rebellion against Grogar's reign, banishing him indefinitely. In the centuries following Grogar's fall, the three pony tribes grew apart. By 1000 BNM, Princess Platinum became the leader of the unicorns, Chancellor Puddinghead became the leader of the earth ponies, and Commander Hurricane became the leader of the pegasi. As distrust grew between the pony tribes, magical monsters known as the Windigos fed off the hatred and created a terrible blizzard that ravaged Greater Equestria. The blizzard forced the tribes to work together, creating the Fire of Friendship and leading to the foundation of Equestria.

The Pillars Era was an era of ancient history in Greater Equestria that spanned several centuries, lasting from 1000 to 100 years before Nightmare Moon. The era began immediately following the foundation of Equestria as Star Swirl the Bearded and his allies rose to prominence for their various feats of heroism and eventually became known as the Pillars of Old Equestria. It was during this era that Star Swirl's students, Celestia and Luna, ascended to become the dual monarchs of Equestria. Eventually, the Sirens began ravaging Equestria and feeding off of negative energy, leading to the Pillars assembling to banish them to the human world. Several centuries later, Lord Tirek invaded Equestria with the goal of taking power and feeding off of Equestrian magic. Tirek's brother, Scorpan, warned Star Swirl of Tirek's invasion, enabling Star Swirl to defeat Tirek and imprison him in Tartarus. In the final years of the Pillars Era, Stygian was kicked out of the Pillars due to a misunderstanding and was ultimately consumed by darkness to become the Pony of Shadows. The Pillars organized at Ponehenge at banished themselves along with Stygian to Limbo.

The Two Sisters Era was an era of ancient history in Greater Equestria that spanned a century, lasting from 100 to 0 years before Nightmare Moon. The era began as a time of peace after the banishment of Stygian and the Pillars of Old Equestria to Limbo. For the better part of a century, Celestia and Luna ruled over Equestria without chaos and Princess Amore continued to severe as the benevolent ruler of the Crystal Empire. During the latter half of the century, however, the chaos spirit Discord conquered the land and established his own reign over Equestria. Celestia and Luna uncovered the Elements of Harmony, left behind by the Pillars upon their banishment, and utilized them to defeat Discord, petrifying him to stone. In 1 BNM, another threat emerged as King Sombra overthrew and killed Princess Amore, seizing control of the Crystal Empire. The two sisters went to war with Sombra's empire and used the Elements of Harmony to destroy his physical form, but Sombra cursed the Crystal Empire into disappearing from the face of the world in his final moments. A year later, Princess Luna was corrupted by darkness as she grew jealous of her older sister and transformed into Nightmare Moon. Celestia and Nightmare Moon fought, leading to the destruction of the Castle of the Two Sisters. Celestia ultimately harnessed the Elements of Harmony against her sister and banished her to the moon for a millenium, ending the Two Sisters Era.

Celestial Era

The Celestial Era was an era of history in Greater Equestria that spanned a millenium, lasting from 0 to 1000 years after Nightmare Moon. The era began immediately following the banishment of Nightmare Moon, with Princess Celestia emerging as the sole ruler of Equestria and the capital being relocated from the destroyed Castle of the Two Sisters to the city of Canterlot.
