Vámosújfalu

Vámosújfalu (Rusyn: Вамошуйфалу; Slovak: Mýtna Nová Ves) is a village in Sárospatak District of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. Its population in 2024 was 689.
History
[change | change source]The name of Vámosújfalu was first mentioned in the 14th century as a customs collection site. During the 1400s, it had several owners, including the Deseő, Tornyai, Csicseri Fodor, Sempsei, Leszteméri, Upori, Pataki, Tekes, Martonosi, Nyársapáti, Csékei, and Tárczay families. By the mid-1500s, it was owned by the Sempsei, Czékei, Dobó, Perényi, Soklyósy, Széchenyi, Szent-Ivány, and Soós families. In 1567, it was listed among the settlements destroyed by the Turks. Between 1570 and 1598, it was owned by the Henkey, Dobó, Horváth, and Magócsy families.
Population
[change | change source]In 2022, 94.3% of the population identified as Hungarian, 5.5% as Rusyn, 2.7% as Roma, 0.9% as German, 0.4% as Slovak, 0.3% as Ukrainian, 0.1% as Armenian, and 1.2% as belonging to other non-domestic nationalities (5.5% did not declare; due to dual identities, the total may exceed 100%). In terms of religion, 20.4% were Roman Catholic, 35.4% Reformed, 13.7% Greek Catholic, 0.4% Orthodox, 0.3% Jewish, 0.1% other Christian, and 4.2% non-denominational (25.1% did not respond).[1]
