Plating of Washington took place in 1815. The town of Washington gave it its name.
Washington was traversed by the railroad in 1857. It was a significant depot and maintenance yard for the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad by 1889. The railroad was transferred to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1893. The railroad employed more than 1,000 people during this period.
