What Is This? was a rock band from Los Angeles, California. The band started in 1977 with two friends from Fairfax High School, Hillel Slovak and Jack Irons, who formed a band called Anthym.[1] Flea joined the band as bass player, before leaving to go to college.[1] Flea and another school friend, Anthony Kiedis, asked Slovak and Irons to play with them in a one off group they called Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem.[1][2] This group became the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Hillel Slovak, Flea, and Jack Irons were members of both bands. Slovak and Irons left after Red Hot Chili Peppers' first album to keep playing with What Is This?M[2] After Natasha Shneider joined the band, they changed their name to Walk The Moon and then to Eleven.
