WikiIndex is a wiki project created by Ray King and John Stanton in June 2005. It aims to document all available wikis on the Internet. The site started online on January 23 2006. As of 2014, it contains information on over 20,000 wikis, categorized by size, activity, language, and subject matter. It uses the free and open-source wiki software MediaWiki.[1]
History
[change | change source]In June 2005, Ray King and John Stanton decided to create a site that would track wiki pages. In October 2005, at the WikiSym conference in San Diego, Ray and John joined forces with Mark Deeley, who had a much more comprehensive alphabetical wiki index of over 1,000 wikis called SwitchWiki. The three decided to join forces. Mark had been working on SwitchWiki since 2003[1] and had documented his ideas in MeatballWiki:OneBigWiki[1][2] and WikiNodes Wiki:ProgressionofWikiOrganization.[3] They envisioned wikis that would be more comprehensive and take full advantage of wiki technology. John processed and expanded the data from both sites to create the original wiki dataset in January 2006.[1]
In 2006, a wiki community formed around WikiIndex, greatly expanding the number of wikis and improving the original format. As of November 2006, the number of articles was 3,195. Dedicated WikiIndex volunteers with system operator status are: Ray King, Mark Dilley, John Stanton, Ted Ernst, David Carey, Mathis Manzel, and Sean Fennell.[1]
In January 2007, the WikiIndex.com
site address was moved to WikiIndex.org
, and the hosting was changed from 1and1.com to DreamHost, using MediaWiki version 1.8.2. In March 2007, DreamHost suffered a server crash and was unable to restore WikiIndex, as were many other sites. WikiIndex was moved back to 1and1.com hosting, using MediaWiki version 1.9.3. In July 2007, the shared hosting account was removed, and WikiIndex was moved to a dedicated server, still on 1and1.com. Using MediaWiki version 1.10.1.[1]
