Tarō Kōno (河野 太郎, Kōno Tarō, born January 10, 1963) is a Japanese politician. He is a member of the Liberal Democratic Party. He is a member of the House of Representatives. He was Minister for Foreign Affairs in the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe cabinet from 3 August 2017 until 11 September 2019.[1]
On 3 September 2021, Kono announced his candidacy for the Liberal Democratic Party leadership in the 2021 election.[2] He lost the election to former Foreign Affairs Minister Fumio Kishida on 29 September.[3]
In August 2024, Kono announced his second candidacy for the Liberal Democratic leadership election to replace Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.[4][5] He lost the election to former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba on 27 September 2024.[6]
