SuperTuxKart is a free, open source kart racing video game for Linux, Mac, Windows, Android, and the Nintendo Switch. An iOS version is in beta. It started out as a fork of TuxKart, an older game that was canceled. TuxKart was worked on from 2000 to 2004. The first release was in 2007 and the game has been added to and made better since.

Gameplay

SuperTuxKart is a racing game where players control free software mascots and other characters. The game has both single player and multiplayer modes. The multiplayer mode can be played online or on the same computer if each player has their own controller. Each character has a kart or other vehicle with different abilities— some karts are heavier, some have a higher top speed, and some accelerate faster. Players can pick up nitro to get a speed boost or power-ups to attack other karts, but must avoid bananas that slow their karts down. Along with the normal game mode, there are also other modes with different rules:

• Time trial: there are no power-ups
• Battle: players attack each other with power-ups until they lose all their health points
• Soccer: a mode based on soccer/football similar to Rocket League

Story

In the game’s story mode, the evil Nolok kidnaps Gnu, leader of the free software world, and says he will eat him if Tux and friends don’t beat him at kart racing. The player must beat various challenges to get through this mode. When all challenges are completed, they can defeat Nolok and rescue Gnu.
