Barnstar
The RickK Anti-Vandalism Barnstar
I am proud to give this barnstar to Sonia, who has quickly and efficiently reverted a lot of vandalism recently! Please keep up the lovely work. And as a side note, I like your new signature. Warmly, —Clementinatalk08:38, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder why...a barnstar has been long overdue to you. :) I'm just sorry I couldn't give you one sooner...anyway, thanks once again for all your work here. You certainly make Wikipedia a much more pleasant experience! Sincerely, —Clementinatalk08:50, 2 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, I was about to hit save on my reply when I saw this. With regard to the RfA... the chickens ain't hatched yet, really- but of course your trust is most appreciated. sonia♫♪02:42, 7 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you
...for finding the right reason for Muralidhara swamiji's quick deletion. :) I was hesitating and wondering which criteria it would fit when you QD'd it. Anyway, good catch! I'm sure you'll be a much finer and faster admin than me in a few days. Thanks again! Sincerely, —Clementinatalk05:48, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, thanks for the link, Sonia. I never check into the English Wikipedia these days so I'm quite ignorant of what's going on around there. ;) Next time I'll simply delete as non-notable. Cordially, —Clementinatalk06:06, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Stub cup 2010
Your prize!
Hi there Sonia! Congratulations for coming second in the Stub Cup 2010 of the simple English Wikipedia! You've reached 162 points, therefore you get a silver Wiki-award! Keep up the good work even without the cup. -Barrastalk09:28, 8 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What do you want to change about it? There's a tutorial here; I have to go now. If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask back :) Cheers, sonia♫♪07:05, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's on en. I could write a localised, updated version, but I think that making a sig shouldn't be first priority and putting it in project space may make it seem more compulsory than it is. sonia♫♪23:28, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I thought about it. If you rewrite it, perhaps Help-space would be better than Wikipedia-space. Or it could be incorporated as a section of an entire page about prefs. It's not like it is a rule or anything. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 03:25, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I would prefer if we rewrote it to reflect the tutorial here. It (the simple version) currently comprises only three sentences. No tbs necessary. I have this watchlisted. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 03:35, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Go for it. There's a lot of irrelevant things (e.g. Esperanza) in the en one; may be better to get the general idea instead of directly userfying it. I suppose it would need to be attributed as well, but it depends on how much of the original you use. Cheers, sonia♫♪04:03, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Congrats
You're now a sysop. I've just given you the mop. The consensus was clear to promote with 29 supports and no opposes. Please subscribe our mailing list. If you're on IRC, contact any admin for access to our IRC channel. Have fun with the tools! -Barrastalk10:21, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks all, and special thanks to Barras for the nom and Fr33kman for encouraging me to run :) TeleCom: it ain't mine to win. sonia♫♪23:25, 10 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Félicitations! I know that you'll be great with the tools.... And you could even block me... *~choke~* ;) Well anyway, I hope you enjoy the use of those tools. And don't stop being so kind now that you have the power! :p Warmly, Belletête-à-tête03:37, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Bella: I'll try my hardest not to block you ;). Kansan, I am honoured that you think so. Diego: what did you mean by using that Japanese phrase in this context? Julian: *hugs* sonia♫♪02:44, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It is my livelihood, so I suppose so. (For future reference, user talk pages are intended for communicating with users about Wikipedia-related things, not for general conversation. That belongs off-wiki.) Regards, sonia♫♪02:26, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
TeleCom, he has already been warned by another admin. Please do not step into things that are already being handled by someone else and are nothing to do with you. (This extends to en as well). sonia♫♪02:44, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's supposed to do that. Sometimes a policy on MediaWiki is summarized on all projects so it isn't needed here. Poly, you should remember that Sonia isn't going to cure everything for you so you should explore other editors on this site so that she doesn't burn out from helping you all the time. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 03:19, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Done, thanks. @Kevin: the link went to meta. Which is fine, except the meta page had been moved to mediawiki. So I fixed the link. sonia♫♪03:22, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I'd been doing a major edit on the English site, which is admittedly too 'chatty' there. I started out to make it a sub-page of my WiP home page… and it looks like I didn't do that. Hmm… not sure why.
Thanks for the link. I'll follow through with that.
Hi sonia! I wrote an article about the USO if you would like to check it.
How can one link to an image that's on Wikipedia but not in Commons? Specifically, I'd like to include the USO logo that's in Wikipedia but not available in Commons. Thank you.
Unfortunately, you cannot. Simple only allows the use of free images, thus our Commons only policy, and the logos of groups or organisations such as the USO or the NRA are protected by US Copyright law. Lauryn Ashby (talk) 21:09, 14 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Lauryn's right. About the article: It is in reasonably good shape, but needs slight tweaking for simplicity and more importantly for neutrality- it reads as vaguely promotional. I'll do a quick copyedit when I get the time. Cheers, sonia♫♪04:44, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both! I figured out why my initial attempt didn't take as a sub-page. As you surely deduced, I coded /[[Mayra Verónica]] instead of [[/Mayra Verónica]]… not so good.
I'm going through the tutorials. I'm used to writing for European and South American markets, but there's a lot to learn.
Don't thank me, you're the one doing the work. This is very good, if you could find another source for it and write another paragraph or two about her life and career, it would easily make DYK on the main page. sonia♫♪08:29, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sonia! Would you mind taking a look at the Mayra Verónica article? Thank you.
Having a read. I'll leave a full review on the talk page when I'm done. (And for future reference, there are things like peer review available.) Thanks for your work! sonia♫♪08:35, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed you commented on that as well. The guy was thought to be a sock and was blocked before; he got a "final chance" and it looks like he's abused it. I'm hitting the sack right now, but perhaps you can do something about him, at least until tomorrow when I'm more awake Purplebackpack8906:34, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I'm aware of all that. Thing is, I can see a good-faith new user doing the same thing- since when he arrived he may have gotten the impression that all short pages can be deleted under A2. I don't think it's a blatant violation of that "final chance", so I am reluctant to block him if that's what you're suggesting. sonia♫♪06:42, 19 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Thank you for helping write articles for everyone to read! If you ever need a hand, this page is always open. sonia♫♪11:28, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I was patrolling recent changes when I suddenly came across your previous account. I admit that I was a bit perplexed by your response, but the truth is I have been out of the wiki a lot lately, and so I needed some catching up to do. It was more or less like an automated welcome template (I feel like such a bot now). :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 05:25, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
All right, no worries. I was just curious as to how you came across my alt. (And by the way, don't worry about editing sporadically– it's good to have a life! ;) sonia♫♪05:52, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I usually start at the bottom of RecentChanges and slowly work my way up the page, reverting vandalism and adding comments and welcome templates that some people may have missed along the way. I've responded to your comment on meta: I basically wanted the template I posted pasted onto the Simplequote main page for users like me who happen to stumble across the wiki and don't know what's happened; as the entire wiki appears to be fully protected, I could only post the editprotected request onto the talkpage of the closing discussion. Oh, and since you've followed through with my request on the AN archives, could you do the same for Wikipedia talk:Simple talk/Archive 1? I've already done the task for archives 36-85, hence Fr33kman gave me the flood flag, but I've yet to do the other archives since they're fully protected as well. (I've been given a huge lecture this morning about how hard the SAT test will be; please excuse me if I've been a little disconcerted tonight...) :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 06:44, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
All right, will do. As for simpleWQ, the thing is that it's quite different from Wikibooks in that nothing needs to be merged back. I've noted your clarification, but as I am in no position to comment further, I didn't reply. sonia♫♪06:50, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Good luck with the SAT by the way; I didn't find it as hard as I thought it would be, so don't freak yourself out over it. sonia♫♪06:56, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Link
Thanks for the template link for the templates. (The link you gave me is for a template. That template contains the templates.) Confusing you? Hazard-SJTalk06:05, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... All right, a bot could probably do it quite quickly in that case. Huggle can be used here, but as you can see it would be rather slow and boring. Probably a better use of time to write articles. I use neither, but Twinkle is better for our purposes in my opinion. sonia♫♪08:29, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Flood
Forgot to ask, can you please remove my flood flag now? I need a bot for that templating. (Another user's bot...I can't create mine :() Hazard-SJTalk08:25, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, TeleCom- do you still need it now? By the way, you do realize that not only is welcoming boring work, but we would also appreciate it much more if you could help write articles- after all, that's what this is about, no? The WLH and related things we can leave to automated processes to do, as there's better ways we can use your help. But I'd encourage you to get out into mainspace, find things you're interested in that don't have articles yet and write them. sonia♫♪22:21, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's ok, I had Yottie grant me the flag, and I suggested some automated process or other at Clementina's talkpage. As to writing articles, I'm still a little busy with this (which was from our discussion a bit back). Other than that, I was creating redirects like Perpetual Motion Machine of the third kind. Oh, and lastly, I think that I tend to welcome new users and place openproxy templates because I feel the need to introduce them to simpleWiki better and let them get ahold of the rules here, since this place is rather small compared to enWiki. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 22:41, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Aye, welcoming is important, but it shouldn't be your primary focus. And how does openproxy tagging help anything? sonia♫♪22:48, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I find it standard to help those using an openproxy to create their own accounts free of the vandalism their proxies usually commit... :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 22:51, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you'd like, the bot can be flagged as a bot, and will be hidden when people click "hide bots" (default). Just ask one of the crats, and they can give you the flag if the reason you want it makes sense. EhJJTALK09:44, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. Given that it's not a bot with a set task, a permanent bot flag wouldn't be permitted, would it? If Hazard's right, I don't need the bot flag and should just uncheck the minor edit box- but I'm sure that it hasn't shown up in the past. Weird. sonia♫♪09:59, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Download it here. When you've downloaded it, the documentation at enwiki isn't particularly clear, but it's good to read through. I screwed up dramatically on my first time using AWB, so I'm reluctant to add you to the checkpage myself at this point. sonia♫♪09:31, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. But I like to use {{welcomevandal}} for those who make test-like edits instead of warning them, because editor retention is important. Many of them may not realize that editing regularly is even a possibility. I know I didn't when I made my account, and my welcome made all the difference. sonia♫06:36, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(change conflict) Precisely, and it's difficult to tell when to use what welcome template. For example, you were confused when Sonia used a {{welcomevandal}} template. So it's necessary to create such a page to distinguish the templates, provided there's enough consensus for the existence of such a page. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 07:00, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
@TeleCom:...No. Please. The system works fine as-is, and the page would get out of date pretty fast. @Hazard: I'm not too concerned about IPs editing (they'll figure out soon enough that accounts are possible), and welcomevandal is also used for registered users. I could make an automatic parser to detect if they are IPs or registered. Would that do? sonia♫06:56, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Welcomebots have been shot down repeatedly. This a completely no-go. They are impersonal, people want to be welcomed by an actual person. Its why we also generally frown at people who go on a rampage welcoming every new user that shows up. It also tends to piss people off who have their talk pages set to email them, as they might have just SUL'd here and not intended to become an active contributer and are now spammed in their email by talk messages. -DJSasso (talk) 14:55, 5 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
AN discussion
I wish to comment now here, as the AN seems as heated up as ever. This idea, I must commend you on your tactfulness. However, even though we, I mean the one accusing me, have not been in agreement as of late on some matters, there are things that we wish to contribute similarly to. For example, see this diff in the DYK, in which the other rightfully commented alongside me and the work on American Dad! I believe that we could have had the chance to reach consensus, had it not been for certain events. :| TelCoNaSpVe :| 06:12, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
What I am proposing is that you two do not talk directly to each other, or "fix" the other's comments. Commenting on DYKs is fine. There is going to be loss of productive edits from any set of restrictions, naturally, but I feel that it is worthwhile. I would recommend that you just stay away from him regardless whether any editing restrictions are enforced. Please do take my advice here. Also, when an administrator is handling something (especially a block), please do not weigh in. There may be sides of the issue that you are not aware of, but either way we know what we are doing. sonia♫06:21, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
change conflict /merged
It seems I inserted my editing restrictions right after you inserted yours. I don't want to step on your toes, but perhaps we can merge our restrictions? Best, Jon@talk:~$ 06:19, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind, if you think that particular restriction was too harsh, I was going to restrict him from editing all userspace outside his own. Best, Jon@talk:~$ 06:26, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, it makes sense. In general there should be no need for him to edit anyone else's userspace anyway, and I agree with the rest of your restrictions. sonia♫06:28, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I should probably apologize as well for having posted that after you responded on Nataly8's talk; I didn't see the response there. Thank you for watching RC so attentively. sonia♫07:53, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just nominated The Lightning Thief for GA. I would love it if you would read over it and leave a few comments. On another note, I'm still working through War and Peace (my new job got in the way). And I'm glad you made it safely back from your hiking/camping trip. PrincessofLlyrtalk17:58, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry- I meant it more for Hazard than for you, though it's good advice for anybody. Thanks for your work of late, and I'm always here if you need any help :) sonia♫07:30, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, we don't appear to. On this Wikipedia, wikiprojects don't work as well as they do on others, because we all basically work on what we are interested in. If other users are interested in what you are doing, they will just help. If you wish to ask for help, Simple Talk will do. However, you may start the Wikiproject if you wish. sonia♫07:36, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It should appear in the sidebar on the left where it says "other languages". I'm not sure what the GA icon is, but you'll see a little star next to the language where the article is FA-class. You have to be using the default skin, and mine is modified so that's probably why I can't see it. @Lauryn(parlez)07:42, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is the same here. I don't know why the template is not working, but I will check with someone who is better at it and let you know. sonia♫07:45, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Now I have another problem. I wrote a article and put a foto from Commons, but I cannot see it (!). It shows me only on red X. Nataly8 (talk) 09:19, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, but I like to welcome them when they do something that we cannot have, like that IP did. I think that if we tell them not to do it, and teach them what they can do, they may help the encyclopedia. You don't have to welcome anyone if you don't want to. Many users disagree about when to welcome somebody. sonia♫10:24, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explain. Hey, I put 5 articles that I started in the peer review. Did you have some comments to do them better? Nataly8 (talk) 10:29, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I will look at them on Saturday. Is that all right? I have a major deadline on Friday that I am trying to meet. sonia♫10:30, 11 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Sonia, thanks for correcting the her to him, as i stole that template from a woman and forgot to change it to him :-) - Dwayne was here! ♫19:22, 13 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well done! I have to get offline in about five minutes, but I'll put the new template on the articles tomorrow. It would be easier if you list them here for me, can you do that? Thanks! sonia♫10:34, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I've done Baguazhang, but the other two are too broad for that infobox, which is about specific disciplines- at least in my opinion. I'll think about it. sonia♫13:06, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think protecting his talk would be good right now, as vandalism patrol will get him in contact with some good-faith new users. Besides, my mop's pretty new and I'd defer to someone with more experience. As for his userpage, it hasn't been touched by anyone else since the protection expired, but if it gets vandalised again it'll be locked again. sonia♫13:12, 15 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
