Talk pages

[change source]

Hi, there is no need to create talk pages if there is no discussion about the article content occurring. They will be created by someone else when there is a need to. Chenzw  Talk  13:45, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear sir, thank you, ok! Am v grateful for your guidance. Hamneto (talk) 13:48, 21 October 2012 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]

[change source]

Hello Hamneto, and welcome to our project. When you create new articles, it is important to provide so-called "interwiki links", to at least one other language version of Wikipedia. Automated scripts (called bots) will then fill in the remaining language links. You create an interwiki link by adding an "internal link" (double brackets [[...]]),with the language code, a colon (:), and the name of the page there, for example [[en:Football]] to link to the football page at English Wikipedia. All the best. --Eptalon (talk) 09:24, 27 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Look at this change, which shows that a bot added the links to the other wikipedias; note that this is just one of my page creations, picked at random, the subject of the article does not matter here. Yes, sometimes these bots also change the links. To know how they work, in detail, I think you should look at the Interwiki bot page at Meta. For my part, all I care about is that there are links to other language versions. If you add at least one (no matter what the language is), the bot will update the article, and add the others. --Eptalon (talk) 12:17, 27 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks! I shall just read this Hamneto (talk) 14:02, 27 October 2012 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]

Quick deletion of Kamila Shamsie

[change source]

The page you wrote, Kamila Shamsie, has been selected for quick deletion. If you think this page should be kept, please add {{wait}} below the line {{QD}} and say why on the talk page. If the page is already gone, but you think this was an error, you can ask for it to be undeleted. You can find more information about the reason here. Choosing categories for new articles

[change source]

Hey, thanks for getting good categories on the new articles you create! That gets forgotten a lot of the time. Please note that if you have something like Category:Ethnic groups in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, you don't need to also have Category:Ethnic groups in Pakistan. That is because the first one is included in the second one. The same is true for Category:Churches and Category:Christianity. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions about this. :) --Auntof6 (talk) 01:10, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear User:Auntof6 hello, and thanks for your message! Shall try my best to abide by this and select good and relevant categories for articles. Your guidance is much appreciated. Regards, Hamneto (talk) 08:51, 28 October 2012 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]

Spending some time on one artile

[change source]

Hello,

If you spend a lot of time on one article, and you do not want to get into edit conflicts, you should use the {{inuse}} template. Add it at the start of the article, and remove it when you are done...--Eptalon (talk) 07:42, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear User:Eptalon thanks, I didnt know about that. I shall certainly use this on the article am working on now. Regards, Hamneto (talk) 11:03, 2 November 2012 (UTC) Hamneto[reply]

Birth- and death-year categories

[change source]

Thanks for creating your recent categories for years of birth and death. You probably didn't know, but we have templates that set up these categories. Please use them when you create these categories. For examples, look at some of your recent ones that I changed to use the templates. Cheers! --Auntof6 (talk) 20:47, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and thanks! Thats kind of you to let me know, I wasnt aware--shall definitely see how you do it and follow suit. Thanks again Hamneto (talk) 02:34, 3 November 2012 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]
You're welcome. There are a few other types of categoriejus that also have templates. Before you create a type of category you haven't done before, look at one that already exists to see if there's anything special about the setup. --Auntof6 (talk) 06:27, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, ok, thanks. Will do. Sometimes, I still get confused by some stuff esp various categories and their use and if its ok I shall ask/seek guidance from you and other senior editors.Hamneto (talk) 06:31, 3 November 2012 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]
Yes, that is definitely OK! One of my special interests is the categories, so feel free to ask whatever you want to know about that. If I can't answer it, someone else will be able to. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:54, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Hamneto! Your new articles are looking great these days! Just one thing: would you be able to merge your new page Jalal-ud-din Rumi to the older page Rumi? Osiris (talk) 06:06, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear User:Osiris hell- oops.. am sorry! I dont know how i just missed this, didnt even think about looking under plain 'Rumi' should have. Had I known then wouldve fixed that. But yes, if youll give me some time, I shall merge these two later in the new week. Would be happy to do soHamneto (talk) 06:14, 4 November 2012 (UTC)hamneto[reply]

Thank you for the encouragement! :) Hamneto (talk) 06:45, 4 November 2012 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]

Hello, Hamneto, and thank you for the good work you do. As to Sufism, in my opinion, the article looks more professional. As to the different groups in Islam, I am not qualified to talk about such things. I am a Christian, and basically know that there are three big groups in Islam. They "split" over questions on who should follow after Muhammad's death. How the self-proclaimed group of Gohar Shahi fits in I have no idea, but I guess that it will be the same as with Christianity, there are three big groups (Eastern Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant), and many smaller ones. The question if a certain group is Christian is left for the experts to decide; in many cases, this is not relevant for "common people", as long as they "accept other positions than their own", i.e. are not fundamentalist. I do have some of this knowledge for Christianity, I don't have it for Islam. --Eptalon (talk) 16:11, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello and thanks very much dear User:Eptalon! Im glad you like the revised ongoing article, still needs work on it, and shall keep trying to make better i.a. However, I think that you and other editors have more experience of simplifying language here--and I think at places in this article, its still difficult/complex--cane be simplified further. I have tried to do so as much as I could, but am still practicing and learning and would be grateful if you or anyone else interested could kindly smooth out this aspect please. Thanks, best regards Hamneto (talk) 06:21, 7 November 2012 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]

Talking to a Pakistani with limited English skills?

[change source]

Hello Hamneto, I may have a somewhat unusual request. There is one (perhaps several) editors in this wikipedia, that are known as "The Pakistani". They got this title, because their edit subjects focused on such subjects, and because they have often shown a pro-pakistan view. This editor has been with us for several years now, and even though they are currently blocked, I know they will be back when the block expires. I write to you, because I think that we are unable to communicate with this editor in English. Even though their language skill may be limited, they have so far not edited another wikipedia, or even actively replied to our requests. Since this editor has often shown a Pakistani viewpoint, they may be from there. To my knolwedge, you are the only named contributor to Simple English Wikipedia who speaks Urdu. Since this has been going on for years now, I no longer think this editor is a simple vandal; simply wanting to do harm; most vandals are not that persistent. Instead I really think this editor wants to help, but that there may be a language problem. As they are blocked now, they cannot edit articles, but they are free to edit their talk page. The last IP the editor edited from is User talk:89.241.201.108, at User talk:2.101.207.246 you may possibly also reach them. 2.101... left some graffitti on Punjab region ([1]) which I have since reverted. This was after the block on the other IPs. The edits of the editor are mostly fine; a few small things need changing, most of the time. I'd be grateful if you could advise and excuse me for the unusual request. --Eptalon (talk) 22:30, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dear User:Eptalon, thats ok, I understand and would be happy to help. I can also appreciate that even though this is the Simple English wikipedia, even simple/r standards can be beyond some folk who have extremely rudimentary English language skills here. I shall have a look at the users and the edits that they made and the history/logs and then also contact the user. Will get back to you. Thanas of East Pakistan

[change source]

Hi Hamneto, there seem to be issues with the articles in Category:Thanas of East Pakistan - for one they are not supposed to be classified as such because they now fall under the administration of Bangladesh (they are slowly being moved to Category:Thanas of Bangladesh), but the other issue is that some of these thanas might not be thanas at all. Are these articles misclassified as districts or sadars? Hope that you can help us out on this. Chenzw  Talk  13:31, 20 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo dear Chenzw, yes I see the difficulties involved--and I shall have a look at the list and then get back to you. Shall try my v best to help out if possible. Regs, Hamneto (talk) 07:14, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]

Notability is the issue...

[change source]

.. with Fatima Bhutto and many other cases. A person isn't notable because they have notable relatives, or because they have done something. Doing a job well is not enough for notability. They are notable if qualified critics or commentators say they are notable in reliable sources. That's what is lacking. Consult WP:Notability (people). Macdonald-ross (talk) 09:29, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Macdonald-ross, thank you for your kind note. Yes, I fully appreciate this. And I have just (re)started this previously deleted article, and intend to expand and develop over time, citing adequate/proper sources. I hope you will give me time, please. Jocelyn Orc-saeed‎

[change source]

Hamneto,

I do not find a Jocelyn Orc-saeed‎ in web searches except here at SEWP. I did find a Jocelyn Ortt-saeed‎, but may not be notable. I don't see why you have created a Redirect to a page changing her name to "orc". Can you please explain? Gotanda (talk) 00:13, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, in some works the name of this author available here in Pakistan is written as Orc-Saeed and in some as Ortt-Saeed, and I dont want to create confusion for Pakistani readers, so have also created a redirect here to this name. I dont see anything wrong with it please? Sincerely, Hamneto (talk) 00:20, 24 September 2014 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]
A web search for the phrase "Jocelyn Orc-Saeed" returns only SEWP. A search for ""Orc-Saeed" returns that and stuff about orcs. The book you cite does not appear in Google Books under that title. Gotanda (talk) 02:11, 24 September 2014 (UTC) QD requested. Gotanda (talk) 02:15, 24 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Dear User:Gotanda, please refer again to my note on the Talk Page and to you, earlier. As stated, there is some dilemma or problem with this poet/writer's name in the published editions of books here in Pakistan. Maybe these books or editions arent listed online, in Pakistan we have 180 million people, and less than 1 million have access to the Net, even today. Most people still depend on published sources, especially college and university stduents. The MAIN PROBLEM is that the name given on the common/popular published edition of the poet's collections here is 'Jocelyn Orc-Saeed' -- I am aware that this might be a misprint in itself but that doesnt change the fact that its the name by which most Pakistani students of Pakistani Literature in English (at BA/MA levels) know this person. So, it was necessary to make this stub in this common name and also to create, at the same time, a redirect or redirects for other people, who might search for this writer/person under the name 'Jocelyn Ortt-Saeed'. I hope this point is clear please? I hope you will please also see my earlier note on the Talk Page of the List of Pakistani writers, in this regard? Some time ago--maybe a year or more-- I had created a separate article/page for a List of Pakistani English writers but this was, for some reason, merged with a larger general list as exists now; in that earlier list I proposed to expand and elaborate on the role and significance of the Pakistani-English genre (by the way recognised globally as a separate 'idiom' globally) and on each of the writers who have written or re writing within this tradition from 1947 to date. I thought that would have been a better idea. Since many so-called 'famous' expat Pakistani writers (some examples are Kamila Shamsie and Mohsin Hamid) are read and appreciated more outside of Pakistan but are very little read or regarded in Pakistan, where writers like Taufiq Rafat, Alamgir Hashmi, Ejaz Rahim, Parveen Pasha, Jocelyn Orc-Saeed or Ortt-Saeed, Hina Faisal Imam, and others, are more popular. However, that is not possible now since the said list has been merged so have created and am crating these separate pages now, gradually. I dont know now, what to do, further? Perhaps you could kindly help out with a constructive advice and suggestions? Thanks. Regards, Hamneto (talk) 12:07, 24 September 2014 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]

Thanks for creating this category. You probably didn't know, but to create categories like this one, we use special templates. The templates add all the text and categories that are needed. I have changed the category to use the special template. You can look at it to see how it is done. When setting up any category that has other, similar categories, look at the coding to see how it is done. We have several different kinds of categories that are set up this way. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions. --Auntof6 (talk) 08:00, 28 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Auntof6 thank you, shall look at the template and try to implement next time I create a category. Regards, Hamneto (talk) 13:01, 29 September 2014 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]

A couple of notes

[change source]

Hi, again, Hamneto. Just a couple of notes based on some of your recent articles.

First, pay attention to your use of upper and lower case. I fixed a couple of places in Nicholson Memorial where you used upper case that should have been lower case.

Second, when you use a template such as an infobox, make sure that you code the parameters correctly. In A Sad Piper:Poems, the parametersfor the infobox were coded incorrectly. That made the information not appear in the article. For most of the parameters, you had the first letter in upper case, when the template needed it in lower case. A couple of the parameters you coded, "editions" and "media", aren't valid for the template no matter what case they're in.

I fixed these problems, so you can look at my changes to see what I did. It might help if you preview an article before saving it to make sure it looks the way you think it should. Feel free to ask if you have any questions! --Auntof6 (talk) 07:03, 30 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Auntof6, hello and many thanks again for your guidance! I have looked the changes kindly made by you to the above two examples and I understand. Im sorry, yes, I shall certainly try my best to follow these. Re the incorrect code, I also note the differences and correction of the parameters. I shall definitely contact you if I need any help or guidance at any stage. Regards, Hamneto (talk) 16:52, 30 September 2014 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]

Hi, and many thanks for letting me know! Yes, well, I am sorry, I did leave a note on the discussion for deletion but I feel bad that I started this article some time back and just left it casually. Should have worked more on it, edited it and added more reliable sources. The problem does seem to persist, that many of our reputable writers here, are not very well covered by the international media, or by various Internet databases and sources. Maybe you could also be kind enough and review other writers added here by me and other writers/editors? I think many of them are still missing references. Many thanks. Hamneto (talk) 06:42, 31 December 2015 (UTC)Hamneto[reply]
Hey Hemneto! Glad to see you're still editing.
Regarding the availability of online sources; if you can find reliable hard-copy sources, like the newspapers and journals you were talking about, just cite those. A source doesn't have to be available online. Just make sure it's a reputable source, like with everything. Try to include page numbers. If it makes it easier you can work on it in your user space while you gather sources. Osiris (talk) 07:07, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
