Constant vandalism Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 20:54, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Protection probably would have been good at the time, but it now hasn't been edited at all in 3 days and the excessive vandalism was over a 2 day period. So  Not done as of now but will keep a watch. --Ferien (talk) 10:50, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting RevDel for African Americans

There was a lot of offensive vandalism on African Americans in which the page was redirected to various titles. I'm requesting that those revisions be deleted from the history. This was on 10 January, 6 April, and 24 April 2024. Kk.urban (talk) 00:18, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have done rev-dels, on those I saw (mostly: redirects to non-existent pages); given the targets it is clear that those are likely racist. I have not oversighted the revisions. Eptalon (talk) 08:02, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have semi-protected the page, for 6 months. Almost all recent changes were racist (such as the redirects mentioned above), or reverting them. Eptalon (talk) 08:12, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

RfD backlog...

Hello all, In the last days, I probably closed around 30 RfDs (those that were clear cases, mostly). There is still some backlog, and we still have 20-ish pages up for deletion. So, fellow admins, please take a look... Eptalon (talk) 08:04, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Looks to have been resolved now. I think we are on top of RfDs at the moment. --Ferien (talk) 10:53, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It keeps going up and down. I've been slowly working on it. fr33kman 10:57, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

While not policy on this wiki, I'm trying to take the approach described here to limit GRP to less damaging areas. Also, the main page attached is currently protected, and therefore non-confirmed users need a page to add edit requests to, which protecting this page would take away. Therefore, this is  Not done --Ferien (talk) 18:50, 12 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why not protect both? Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 13:20, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Because he will just move to another page. Better to keep the rants outside of mainspace articles. XXBlackburnXx (talk) 13:23, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
How about blocking@XXBlackburnXx Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 13:27, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Blocking me? He is using residential proxies, some of them are mobile IPs which are highly dynamic so its kinda pointless. Also I have a new global filter which catches him pretty well (see abuse log from few hours ago), but he has no life and too much free time on his hands, and spends literally minutes bypassing them with brute force. I can go beyond that, but at the moment I don't want to deal with false positives. XXBlackburnXx (talk) 13:43, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Talk pages, where everyone submits their suggestions or personal opinions, shouldn't be protected. We are here to revert LTA attacks on them. DIVINE (talk) 13:43, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Question:How even does GRP even do it? How is a global community of millions unable to effectly stop GRP from creating new accounts/disruptive editing on different IPs?
Is there any policy saying that. Enwiki's policy is "Talk pages are not usually protected, and are semi-protected only for a limited duration in the most severe cases of disruption." which I think this qualifies for at this point@DIVINE@XXBlackburnXx Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 14:41, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with LTAs is it's like playing whack-a-mole. As soon as you deal with one another pops up. Plus they create socks in batches. We are mostly limited to reacting to the problem fr33kman 16:18, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is there no way to block the IP there are on from making accounts? And blocking the IP ranges they use?@Fr33kman Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 16:56, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes certainly and we do, but we can only do that for a limited time and we have to limit the range since each block may affect innocent people. We have many IPs blocked for up to three years, some very few indefinitely. They just find new proxies that aren't blocked. One of the WMF global rules is "no open proxies", which all projects must block on sight. But even these change, get closed and get unblocked. Simply put we are doing all we can. Hopefully the vandals get bored and move on or grow up. fr33kman 17:13, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a former steward and most of thier time is spent just on this problem. It's never ending. fr33kman 17:15, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why did you mentioned me here @Me Da Wikipedian ?DIVINE (talk) 17:36, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Because you said talk pages shouldn't be protected.@DIVINE Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 17:37, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Me Da WikipedianYes i did there is nothing more to discuss. We cannot salt talk page that’s all. DIVINE (talk) 17:40, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you ask me why? I have already explained above there so don’t ping me. DIVINE (talk) 17:42, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To what point to we have to keep playing whack a mole on this page, rather than protecting it. They could request to edit on this page, similar to have users can request to edit a protected page with a protected talk page at enwiki Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 17:43, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Me Da Wikipedian Protecting page and talk page is different things. we cannot protect talk page. If you check in depth we already have done something best from our side. DIVINE (talk) 17:49, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why can't we is what I am saying. Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 17:50, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nobody is whack, and we are doing everything we can to combat vandalism. I assume you are also an editor in our community; why don't you start cleaning up vandalism instead of questioning repeatedly? While we have previously responded to you many times. DIVINE (talk) 18:21, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am doing both. I was just wondering why we aren't able to use preventative measures, considering that:
It's 1 person
Most of their IPs (and ranges) and accounts are vandalism only
They seem to be targeting a few select pages in particular Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 18:24, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ferien, @Fr33kman, @Vermont please respomd them. i am done with my response. DIVINE (talk) 18:35, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Previously, User:Ferien has reverted many of their edits as non-simple/spam. The user continues to add more context with references but I'm not sure if they are simple enough to remain. Should they be reverted, and is this really what we usually declare as spam? In addition, should we allow their edits to continue? MathXplore (talk) 14:15, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what this editor's intent is, but there is reason to revert almost all of their edits. You've got this which is written in a very promotional manner, which is definitely spam. A lot of the references they use to prove are not really independent, being shops where the articles are written for you to buy something. And if you look at a lot of the ones I reverted as "not simple" it's almost like they are writing exactly the opposite of what we would like. They have ignored the warnings about Simple English, and as a result, should probably be blocked at some point. --Ferien (talk) 20:10, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Should this be a one-sentence article or a redirect? I have already imported this to Wiktionary. MathXplore (talk) 12:17, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think most people will understand it as the part of WW II that wwas in the Pacific (between China, Russia, Japan, and the U.S.). I do think we need a separate article, because some actions predate the start of WW II, such as the en:Mukden incident or the en:Marco Polo Bridge incident. Note that there is a 'War of the Pacific' (also called Nitrate War, between Bolivia and Chile, in the late 19th century, and the Chincha Islands War, also in the 19th century between Spain and its former colnies, also in the 19th century. Both of them have been called 'Pacific War'. Eptalon (talk) 12:58, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Davey2010, no worries, they can be a little complicated to get your head around. For future requests, it's an IPv6 /64 that's equivalent to blocking an IPv4. An IPv6 /32 is the largest range that is possible for us to view the contributions of. I found w:WP:/64 very helpful for understanding IPv6 ranges. --Ferien (talk) 16:35, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Würzburg

Hello, I was checking random pages to find typos and vandalism, and I landed on Würzburg. I saw a lua error at the top of the page, saying something like (and I'm not joking) "*someone* rapes babies on wheels". I immediately tried to remove it, but could not find anything like that in the page source. The error disappeared from the page too. This is not a joke on my part, I really saw this. Can someone investigate? Cheers, Hockeycatcat (talk) (changes) 09:13, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

IP creating talkpages

Hi, 94.175.203.242 has been spending their time creating talkpages with {{Talk page}} - Should these all be deleted or are they fine ?, I didn't want to speedy all of these clogging up the QD category so thought I'd come here, Thanks, Kind Regards, –Davey2010Talk 13:42, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(Non-administrator observation) Davey2010, there is no need to QD the talk pages, however the user should be warned for creating these unnecessary pages. It's not disruptive, just a waste of time, really. Hockeycatcat (talk) (changes) 13:49, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A) If I were going to CSD them all I wouldn't be here now and B) How is this not disruptive ?, Either way respectfully you're not an admin and as such there's absolutely no need for you to even comment in this thread. –Davey2010Talk 14:15, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The only person who seems to be bothered by these pages being created is you. It makes no difference whether the talk page is there or not. Also, please read WP:NPA. Hockeycatcat (talk) (changes) 14:17, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well yeah of course I'm bothered by it otherwise I wouldn't be here now? I've seen admins in the past delete these pages so I thought it was only sensible to come here and ask what should be done about it (if anything). Go read AGF. –Davey2010Talk 14:19, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also I came here for advice on on what should be done about it (if anything), I didn't need to be told "not to CSD them" or that "this isn't disruptive". Why you felt the need to interject yourself into something that is of none of your concern I will never know, –Davey2010Talk 14:18, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Again, please read up on WP:NPA. I am not attacking you here, I am merely throwing in my two cents, hence the nao tag. Hockeycatcat (talk) (changes) 14:19, 23 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Symptoms of editcountitis

User:SurferSquall continues to make huge amounts of tiny edits after being told to stop in February on his talk page because of it flooding the recent changes feed. They’ve claimed that this is because of their intermittent internet connection, even though you do not need a continuous internet connection to use the editor, and making numerous changes only increases the amount of times that you need to connect to Wikipedia. These edits are usually a single byte in size and many are made in the same minute. This pattern is evident on the history of their user sandbox or just by skimming through their contributions. I would like to assume good faith, but it’s hard to considering that they regularly update an edit counter on their user page after continuing to artificially inflate their edit count despite being told to stop by numerous admins. If any administrators choose to take action on this, it should be noted that they are currently blocked on enwiki for sockpuppetry. I also want to be clear that this is not intended as a personal attack, this is just what I have observed from looking at their contributions and talk page. FatalFit | ✉   01:05, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I can only say effectively the same things I've said before; yes, I have an awful internet connection, and yes I work like this. I personally find it easier to work and publish in small amounts rather than large edits. And yes, I have lost work several times to revision ID issues, and I'd love not to have that happen. I keep an edit counter on my page to keep track of how many I've made. It's a fun stat. I hate to see posts like this on the noticeboard, because I mean nothing wrong yet something like this will glare outwardly whenever I attempt an unblock on enwiki. SurferSquall (talk) 02:21, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes I am bored and will fool around aimlessly on my sandbox. I do not care much about the actual number of edits I make. I'm sorry it matters so much to you. SurferSquall (talk) 02:24, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I personally find it bizarre that nearly 20% of your edits are to your own user sandbox and nearly 25% are to your user page. This feels a lot like gaming the system in some form or another. I'm going to look through mainspace contributions right now, but this alone is an issue.@SurferSquall Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 21:28, 28 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Purely looking at my stats is not going to tell you who I am. I don't work in a normal manner. If you have a problem with it, that's fine I guess but it does not mean malice on my part. SurferSquall (talk) 02:18, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Your edits (1 and 2) introduced an external link to Wingman. We don't need that on the article. Additionally, your edits introduced complex language into the article that was not Simple English. The reason for the revert was stated in the edit summary and on your talk page. :) Have a great day! Operator873 connect 17:39, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that link existed long before May 23 (see simple.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=9561089&oldid=9561085&title=Artificial_intelligence ). On May 23, it was hidden, and the IP made an edit-remark that the (problematic) link is spam.--Too bad that nobody removed the URL, instead of reverting versions.--And i hope that there are no hard feelings about me pointing out that Artificial general intelligence (or AGI) and Generative artificial intelligence are different subjects. I can sort of see, that they names look similar. 2001:2020:31B:B8E1:D00C:16B4:9112:DE24 (talk) 21:39, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind at all. People, all people, are wrong at times. I honestly didn't care about the difference, to be honest. I do care about the quality of the article and it being written in language easy to understand. Also, since I have your attention here, please stop hiding text in articles using the HTML comment <!-- --> tags. That isn't appropriate on any Wikipedia project, even if you don't like what's written. Operator873 connect 01:27, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

A.I.

The article about A.I. has been locked by someone who is too involved in the article. Just saying.--Since I ain't gonna be starting articles about any of those subjects, then see ya in December.--By that time some one might have figured out that it was wrong to remove mention of [[Artificial general intelligence (or AGI).--And the discussion page seems to show that there is a learning curve involved, to grasp that Generative artificial intelligence - is a different subject. Yikes. 2001:2020:31B:B8E1:5F5:4AA8:1FE3:DD2B (talk) 20:46, 9 June 2024 (UTC)/ 2001:2020:31B:B8E1:5F5:4AA8:1FE3:DD2B (talk) 20:47, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, there is no need to thank (the I.P.) who hid the spam-link on May 23 (see simple.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=9561089&oldid=9561085&title=Artificial_intelligence ) - because i *appreciate* having the article locked' (for IPs). That is thanks *enough*. 2001:2020:31B:B8E1:5F5:4AA8:1FE3:DD2B (talk) 21:20, 9 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I became involved on the page because I had to revert the damage you did to it. I subsequently protected to page because there was a well documented history of on-going spam on the page. And you're right. There is no thanks due to the IP who hid the link because HTML comment tags should never be used to hide any portion of an article for any reason. Full stop. There is a steep learning curve on this project regarding how to successfully write in simple English, so we'll forgive you for trying to insert and argue for the inclusion of Artificial general intelligence (or AGI) without any effort to explain what that is in simple English. You can just toss a term you want in the article and walk away. That's not how this works. I strongly suggest you take a while to read WP:HOW and realize there is a vast and staggering difference between this project and the English Wikipedia. It is much more difficult to write quality articles here because you can't use complicated language. I wish you the best of luck. Operator873 connect 01:57, 10 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

IP making edits and then reverting themselves immediately after

Hi, So we have an IP 2.98.119.86 who copypastes from en and then reverts themselves immediately after - I know some accounts do this in order to gain autoconfirmed/Extended confirmed status but I didn't know if there was any reason why the IP is doing it?,

As far as I'm aware IPs aren't able to get the access levels registered users can get so I'm rather baffled here, Anyway not sure if this would tantamount to disruptive editing so thought I'd ask/post here, Thanks, Kind Regards, –Davey2010Talk 18:46, 20 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome

This article Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome is clearly not ready for mainspace yet, because it was copied directly from enwiki. However, the user who created it seems to be trying to simplify it. Could it be moved to their userspace (User:Produde29499/Asthma-COPD Overlap Syndrome) so they can work on it there? As they are not autoconfirmed, they won't be able to move it themself yet.

Protection request2

Hi, Could the following pages be indef protected please?

Many thanks, Kind Regards, –Davey2010Talk 19:32, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Davey2010 I admittedly did not go through every one of them, but the ones I went through have no vandalism. Pages are generally not protected pre-emptively. Also, I don't believe that non-autoconfirmed users are able to edit user pages anyways (because of an edit filter) and there would no point in semi-protection (assuming your not suggesting full as then you can't edit). Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 21:22, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Me Da Wikipedian You are not an administrator. You have no need to reply to requests like this. Also user pages can be protected, and it is possible for IPs to edit user subpages (I just did it to test). 136.152.209.22 (talk) 21:26, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And...nor are you. You can edit subpages, not the actual userpage itself. And please undo any test edit. Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 21:26, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Me Da Wikipedian Yes I know that. I wouldn't have commented here if you hadn't done so. I see you have been informed before about comments in RFP's being unnecessary. The user subpages can also be vandalized and "no pre-emptive protection" doesn't apply to user or talk pages. I undid the test edit. 136.152.209.22 (talk) 21:30, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello...This is not an RFP...and no pre-emptive protection, unless you can show me otherwise seems like it applies everywhere with few exceptions Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 21:32, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Me Da Wikipedian Do you really have nothing better to do than sticking your nose in places that don't concern you?. Like you're not even an admin here so why do you feel the need to comment here ?
I wanted these protected as A) In a few days time I'll be requesting an indef block here and B) my archives have previously been targetted by IPs and as such I would rather leave here with the knowledge and hope everything will be preserved,
These aren't used anywhere and they don't require updates so there's no reason not to protect them, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 22:22, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"In a few days time I'll be requesting an indef block here" don't leave, please? You understand the vandal wins if they drive you away @Davey2010 Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 23:07, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the kind words but it's not the IP I'm bothered about - It's Auntof6 and her actions, I was blocked for 24 hours for using the words "god damn" and calling the vandal IP a moron and then because I replied on my talkpage that "[She's] Clutching at straws in order to block me is sad and rather pathetic" earned me a talkpage access revocation,
If we're going to block people for using words like "god damn" and "idiot" as well as refuse to block vandal IPs on the basis that "they've been insufficiently warned" despite it being plain as day the IP is not here to contribute to this encyclopedia then yeah I want no further part of this project.
I appreciate the latter may not be "policy" but the IP in question makes the same vandal edits again and again which is why they're on a 3rd/4th block ..... I don't have the mental patience to go through the warning system for a vandal who clearly only uses this place to vandalise and whos also the same person,
The sad part is since my Commons block I've tried addressing and adjusting my incivility and tried to be more calmer and also tried using the word fuck less often ... all to no avail. I tried. –Davey2010Talk 23:40, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we refuse to block people who had not been sufficently warned. If you want to change that, ignoring the policy is not how to go about it. I also find it, err, interesting that one of your reasons for being unblocked on Commons was insufficent warning, but whatever.
Anyways remember when I said that I disagree with you being blocked for 24 hours? Looking at your history on Commons and enwiki I'd say maybe it was too short. You are on your 8th block on Commons and enwiki.
In the future, please try to address your incivility by being civil. Thank you.
But this is not a reason to leave. Unless a civility policy is truly too much to handle (which I doubt), I see no reason why you can't work on it and remain a helpful member of simplewiki. @Davey2010 Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 02:17, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"we refuse to block people who had not been sufficently warned" Well if that were the case then the 2 previous blocking admins would've declined my report ... so that's a lie.
Difference was I'm not a vandal ... I didn't vandalise the project and then say "I've been insufficiently warned".... I get your point but if this guy wasn't a vandal and was making good-but-clumsy edits then of course I'd warn them repeatedly/80 times if I had too,
FYI, All of my blocks on EN and Commons have centered around my usage of the word fuck (fuck off, no fucks given) .... Did I use the word fuck in my reply at VIP? No. Did I replace the word fuck with god damn? Yes. If that's not addressing my incvility issue I don't know what is!, My reply was full of rage sure but it was hardly incivil and hardly deserved a block over and most certainly didn't deserve tpa over,
If civility policies were too much to handle don't you think I would've left EN 10 years ago ?.... I accept irrespective of my views, we have en:Wikipedia:Comment on the content, not the contributor for a reason, so for the moron comment a warning would've sufficed .... but I refuse to be a part of a project where you can be blocked for using non-offensive words like "god damn" .... and then hilariously have your TPA revoked over calling their actions sad/pathetic,
Anyway all of this is irrelevant to my above post, Have a great day. –Davey2010Talk 11:23, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're not a vandal, yes. That is not free-license to do anything at all you want. It is not the case that or a few sets of words/phrases are the only possible incivil things. What is addressing your incivility issue is by replacing things that are uncivil with this that are actually civil themselves (or just removing the uncivil things to begin with). "a warning would've sufficed" if you hadn't been blocked 16 times for some sort of incivility elsewhere. "god damn" can be offensive, by the way.
Also what times were they blocked without sufficient warning. The May 24 they had plenty of warnings but just blanked in between, May 29 I gave them a final warning, June 6 was Vandalism within 1 day of being unblocked (which I believe doesn't require warnings), and thats it.
Also, to cite enwiki for you, NPA is not free-license to avoid people acting based on a long pattern of yours.
Anyways, I hope you don't leave. Here's an idea:Don't type when your angry. It never ends well. @Davey2010 Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 18:20, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Davey2010 and Me Da Wikipedian: All  Done. For what it's worth, user pages can be protected at the user's discretion, and that may be pre-emptive or not. I appreciate that hasn't been written in policy, I've just boldly updated it to reflect standard practice. With this whole situation, both sides made mistakes, and I sincerely hope we can move on and not lose either valued contributor through this. --Ferien (talk) 17:28, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. @Ferien Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 18:20, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Ferien, Many thanks I greatly appreciate your help,
I don't know why but I assumed I had to go through levels 1-5 each time when in fact I can just level 5/6 them each time - still relatively pointless but at least it's not wasting much time as if you were doing 1-5 each time,
@Me Da Wikipedian I've just checked and they were blocked without warning on the 6th June, Thing is though I've also had a vandals IP rangeblocked on different IPs whom have not recieved warnings after blocks either and again this wasn't queried/questioned by anyone, Maybe it's just been assumed I have warned them and because of that I've just assumed my way has been okay when in fact it hasn't and I've just not known that,
Maybe the TPA revoc was a blessing in disguise, maybe they did that to keep me around and I just didn't know :), Anyway we live and we learn, I'll do better going forward, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:54, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"I assumed I had to go through levels 1-5 each time when in fact I can just level 5/6 them each time" - There are only 4 level of warnings. Confused. Vandalism within 1 day of being unblocked is (I believe) a valid reason to block without warnings.
"the TPA revoc was a blessing in disguise, maybe they did that to keep me around" - Could you explain?
"I'll do better going forward" - Thank you.

Just a little note, very much like enwiki we don't do self blocks as a rule. I am on record as willing to consider them but not for indef. If a user wants to leave then it is normal for them to just leave, as many of our number have done over the years. :) fr33kman 00:23, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Fr33kman, That's fair enough - some admins do do indef-blocks but they're sparse, Anyway thanks for your reply, Happy editing :), –Davey2010Talk 09:56, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's not. Only warning is instead of the normal warning process. And what would be 6? A VIP report? Normally you should not do only warnings or VIP reports first though. @Davey2010 Me Da Wikipedian (talk) 01:08, 26 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
