Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Current issues and requests archive 3

From Simple English Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

No Title

I'm going to archive this page (by moving it to a subpage, as described here) soon. I will bring back the active discussions to the ANB again. Please let me know if you have any objections. - Huji reply 15:51, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I think this is a page to pass current requests to the admins. I therefore have no problem with archiving older requests. We should hoever look that the last month or so is still present (or available in the archives). Therefore when you do please properly label the archive. --Eptalon 16:54, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Received another rubbish-filled message from ChristineJansson. I did a Google on the email address and found that the same user was filling up one of those paid-to-write projects with rubbish as well. Archer7 - talk 08:56, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I did a little checking on En.wiki and found that they identified the Kate McAuliffe vandal's IP address last December. I blocked the IP here for 30 days (the vandal has more than enough individual blocks to get atleast to that point) in hopes of it stopping the issue here as well. I tagged the IP's talk page with the block. No idea if they will get around it, but atleast it should slow them down for a month. -- Creol(talk) 20:15, 7 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

History merge

The histories of Echo (Greek Mythology) and Echo (mythology) need to be merged. I'm guessing the page is meant to be at Echo (mythology). J Di 21:00, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Craptons of Arabic articles

While routinely checking the wiki for problems, I noticed an editor crapflooding articles in Arabic. The editor (User:ﺉﯓﯝﮩﮦﯽ) finally stopped after I left a big red box telling him/her to stop (in arabic). However, the user is not blocked, because he/she stopped; the user might come back for more. Cheers, PullToOpenTalk 04:38, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Range contribs

We can now check the collective contributions of a range of IP addresses! Found this on en:WP:BRION:

"It is now possible to view the contributions of certain ranges of IP addresses, with the last or last two octets permitting wildcards. IP ranges are input in CIDR notation, like Special:Contributions/127.0.0.0/16 or Special:Contributions/127.0.0.0/24. Only /16 and /24 ranges are currently permitted. (patch by Maxim Semenik)"

This will be very useful for keeping on top of dynamic vandals from schools etc. Archer7 - talk 22:53, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An excellent tool; range blocks would be good with the expected increase in school traffic because of the Schools Gateway. Anthonycfc [TC] 23:03, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Can't get it working, maybe it was just installed on EN... Archer7 - talk 23:06, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming vandalism-created usernames

Should offensive usernames that were deliberately created to appear at the top of Special:Userlist be renamed to something more generic, such as numbers or something that begins with a character that follows Z (if such a character exists)? I personally see little need for such an action, but then it isn't me who is being accused of having a crush on "that girl" or engaging in sexual relations with trees. J Di 00:34, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That would probably be the best course of action, it's also spamming up the new user log. :) Cbrown1023 00:36, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This could be interesting. Maybe it's time to turn on the username blacklist? That would be a good idea, but depending on how many usernames show up, it might be an ugly work load on our two bureaucrats. Maybe the stewards could give all active administrators brief bureaucrat access to help cut down the crap if it gets too bad? PTO 00:39, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Seems a sensible idea, none of those accounts have probably done anything productive, and they're slanderous. Majorly (o rly?) 00:53, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't look that bad at all if I just went through and renamed them all. Unfortunately we'll have to wait for a developer to install the blacklist... Archer7 - talk 09:51, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Does this look OK? Archer7 - talk 09:55, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. Does EJ stand for anything? J Di 15:17, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Essjjay. So we can get some sort of idea which vandal it was without looking through the rename logs. Maybe 'SJ' would have been more obvious... I'll get started on the rest. Archer7 - talk 15:48, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Cleared the user list, using ^(BLOCKED-KMCA*) on some. Archer7 - talk 16:08, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There are a few more on the second and third pages. There's probably loads more further down the list, but the first three or so pages are probably the most important as they are the ones people are most likely to see. J Di 16:11, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know there's more, there's hundreds, but I'm not too keen about doing it on anything that isn't mucking up the list too much or unless it's incredibly offensive, or at the specific request of an (offended) user. It does make things a little more difficult to track. I'll take a look through the rest of the list to try and find any that are particularly bad. Archer7 - talk 16:16, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quite fun making up codes. Now ^(BLOCKED-vandal) is for vandal accounts, and ^(ATTACK-attacked user) is for attack accounts. Archer7 - talk 16:30, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Finished renaming all the really horrible ones on the user list. Archer7 - talk 17:09, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant! This means that they are available for registration once again. Or am I missing something here? :-O Миша13 16:03, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That really isn't an issue since there is little difference between !!!!!!Im A Troll and !!!!!!!Im A Troll. There are near infinite ways to use the same name, so clearing it really wouldn't matter much. On the other hand, at least when someone pulls up the user list, the first page is something other than 50 spelling variations on one troll. This also cleared out most of the more offensive names from the list. Yes, troll will be trolls and make more offensive names but they would do that anyway so no loss by renaming them and removing the effects of the troll in the first place (plus tossing the accounts to the end of the list just to get them out of the way) -- Creol(talk) 16:16, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Optimum Online blocks

The ISP Optimum Online (Cablevision Systems) has been blocked for a period of two weeks due to recent vandalism. The block affects IP users from that ISP and prevents account creation. Existing accounts from that ISP should not be affected. -- Creol(talk) 13:16, 9 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

How to join

Can you tell me the difference between big wiki administrators and here, how to become administrators only for this page, i may have some time and would like to contribute. On both wikis, once you become administrator, how often must you log on, is there a review period anyways, after how many months? — Preceding unsigned comment added by User:213.178.252.153 (talkcontribs)

Once you become an administrator, you do not have to log in any set amount, or do any set amount of work. We will thank you for as much work as you can do. There is no review period. --Deskana 15:08, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
You apply for adminship by putting your name (and application) onto the respective page. To have a realistic chance, you need:
  • A username (only identified users can apply or vote)
  • To be with the project for about 3 months time
  • To have at least 1.000 edits, in SimpleWP, main namespace.
Additionally, you will need to convince the community to support you rather than opposing you.--Eptalon 15:13, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use

I can't find a fair use policy on this Wikipedia. Should I copy the one from enwiki? --Deskana 15:53, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I copied from en:Wikipedia:Fair use criteria, to Wikipedia:Fair use, and tagged it as proposed. --Deskana 16:33, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Are we supposed to have local images? In Special:Upload there's a big notice saying "NO IMAGE UPLOADS!" and in Wikipedia:Image use policy it says we are not allowing local uploads. So I guess if we're only uploading image to Commons, we don't need a Fair Use policy.
By the way, we should post a bug (I don't know if someone already did) or ask a developer to close local upload. FrancoGG ( talk ) 16:56, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it doesn't say anywhere on Special:Upload that uploading is not allowed. Someone should change MediaWiki:Uploadtext/simple to represent as much. And can someone please delete Wikipedia:Fair use and Image:STALKER-boxart.jpg please? --Deskana 17:01, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It has one massive bright red notice and a big blue box explaining it all. Are your browser/MediaWiki settings causing them not to show up? Anyway, we want uploads open for spoken articles, PDF stuff etc, so we left it open, but hid the 'upload file' option from the toolbar. We don't like fair use images because copyrights are a real headache, and also when people redistribute our work (pretty important for Simple English) they can do it freely and easily knowing that everything's under one license. Archer7 - talk 21:48, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see any big blue and red box, and I don't see the code for one in Mediawiki:Uploadtext/simple either, which is what I believe is displayed on Special:Upload. Sorry. --Deskana 00:13, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That may be because in your preferences you have selected another language, but I can't find "simple" in the Language drop down menu... are you sure we have installed a language called "simple"? If not, creating Mediawiki:Uploadtext/simple doesn't make much sense.
In fact, there is a big notice in MediaWiki:Uploadtext. FrancoGG ( talk ) 00:22, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My language in my preferences is "en - English". I've never changed that. And yes, I have just checked, it's definitely that. --Deskana 01:21, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Someone might want to change MediaWiki:Uploadtext/en as that seems to be the problem. --Deskana 01:22, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My language is also 'en', but the code for all languages is on MediaWiki:Uploadtext it seems. Strange... Archer7 - talk 11:23, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I rechecked Special:Upload, cleared my cache, forced refresh etc. It still has no warning for me. I can provide a screenshot if you like. --Deskana 17:23, 15 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked User:192.139.27.18

Given their history, I have blocked anonymous editing from that IP address. People are still able to create accounts, and to log in. Logged in users will be able to edit, anonymous ones will not. Just wanted to let you know (user has been informed on the talk page). --Eptalon 19:38, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator Requirements

Can someone here just run over the basic admin requirements for me? Thanks. Jordanhatch 11:32, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think there are "requirements", but most look for about 1000 edits, and three months experience. See here and here for failed RfAs and why they failed. Majorly (hot!) 11:59, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
2000 edit or 3-4 month? why not...--vector ^_^ (talk) 19:18, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Block/deletion request

Could someone please do a block and/or deletion of User:Zepp for the pro-Nazi stuff on his page? I warned him, fairly nicely considering, and the user declined (to put it mildly). Thanks, - -  BrownE34  talk  contribs  18:09, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked and deleted. Archer7 - talk 19:17, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Problem account

Please indef this account asap, as an impersonator of User:SlimVirgin from the English Wikipedia. This is a problem account, and shouldn't be allowed to edit (unless, of course it is SlimVirgin which I very much doubt). Any admin who is familiar with recent events regarding Daniel Brandt will know why. Thanks. Majorly (hot!) 00:02, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This needs to be blocked and the real SlimVirgin wouldn't have just reverted, she would have replied first. Cbrown1023 00:09, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Proof (vandalism reverted by Majorly). Cbrown1023 00:18, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also User:Linda Mack. Thanks. Majorly (hot!) 01:20, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Could you please explain this some more? I just read this and can't figure out how an account named Sarah McEwan is an impersonation of a user named Slim Virgin. What is going on here? Blockinblox - talk 01:56, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The first edit to the user page links to en:User:SlimVirgin. Personal information about her wa added to the user page. The other contributions include calling me a troll. This is not SlimVirgin. Perhaps PullToOpen will know more about this. Majorly (hot!) 02:02, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For any admin reading this, an attack site has been trying to out me (User:SlimVirgin on the English Wikipedia) for the last year, and has come up with various names for me. Every so often, someone creates accounts in these names on various projects. These have nothing to do with me, but the edits clearly indicate the accounts were created as part of the trolling. I'd appreciate it if they could be deleted. SlimVirgin 04:56, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As there were only 2 edits on the SlimVirgin account before this, I would prefer to have confirmation of it being the same person as on En.wiki before deleting/indef blocking, but as that does not seem likely (and can be corrected later if need be) I have blocked the user and deleted the user page in question. -- Creol(talk) 05:19, 21 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Creol, this is SlimVirgin from the English Wikipedia, and I've left a note addressed to you on my Wikipedia talk page confirming it. [2] The other accounts mentioned above were not me, and were set up for the purpose of trolling me. Thank you for deleting them. SlimVirgin 00:39, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, it's a bit late, but I do know more about this matter. If any of the admins here want any more information, feel free to send me an e-mail and I'll explain. PTO 20:34, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Movie vandalism

I have been seeing a lot of vandalism with the articles dealing with movies of the last few weeks. With each new article added for another studio or a list of movies by a studio, they are also including multiple fake movies in addition to the legit ones. For the most part, when they create an article they are copy/pasting part of the en:wp page and just adding a few bits to it. They are also going to the other articles and adding films (usually when they say a film was produced by more than one company they add it to the other companies as well). None of these movies have imdb mentions, no google hits, not listed on the companies official pages. The edits are comming for a group of IP's out of New Zealand. The fake titles tend to be said to belong to 20th Century Fox. They like Fox for some reason.. Fix's list of movies has been copy/pasted to several pages already and lists of shows (usualy just family guy though) have been created under many names. Fake movie titles they love to add include Superbowl, Thousands of Posters and The Diary. The IPs change as do the ISPs and they aren't a huge threat so blocking isn't realy an option at this point, but we do need to keep an eye out for more trouble from them. -- Creol(talk) 03:17, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Don't block this IP range:

66.230.192.0/19. This IP range belongs to a malfunctioning Foundation Squid cache. As a result, almost every edit is going through this IP range. Blocking this IP will cause a large amount of autoblocks. A similar event has already happened at the English Wikipedia, with absolute chaos erupting. Sean William 22:22, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Requested Move

Is there a requested move page on Simple English Wikipedia? It would be nice to change the Dokdo page to Liancourt Rocks per the move on English Wikipedia, but it isn't possible for a non-admin (except for a cut/paste move). LactoseTI 03:57, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Any named user can move pages here --Eptalon 14:53, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A non-admin cannot move it over the existing page, though... There was an article split earlier. LactoseTI 17:16, 16 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator tan

I added an administrator tan (look here) to the top of the user page of most of the administrators of Simple English wikipedia. I hope it could help distinguish them more easily, so people can know who to talk to, on special cases. I'm sorry if it has made any inconvenience to anyone. Of course, the owner of the user page is allowed to remove it. - Huji reply 17:02, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's what this page is for really. Billz (Talk) 17:29, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Change my username

I chose a username, "Коммунизма86К", then I was blocked "for an expiry time of indefinite". The reason was "Communism; states the username". That sentence is unclear. I also am immediately would be willing to change my username. I cannot even E-mail a bureaucrat because my "Special:Emailuser" function is blocked, and the 68.224.239.145/Anonymous account is not registered. Please unblock me.
P.S.: How long is indefinitely?
Ионас Д. Ранд

Archer7 unblocked you so that you can create a new account; indefinitely simply means the block does not expire. --Eptalon 11:13, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, because you haven't edited under that account yet, there's no need to rename you. I've removed the block on account creation for you, so please create a new account while you're logged out. We don't allow Cyrillic characters or other symbols in usernames because it can make things extremely difficult for other people, so please don't use these in your new name. Indefinitely means that there is no time set for the block to expire. I've also read through your former userpage, and you do seem to have some rather contraversial views. We recommend normally that people keep their opinions on contraversial topics off Wikipedia, so that it doesn't start arguments etc, so I strongly advise you not to recreate a page like that. The reason we block people with 'communism' in their usernames is because of another vandal that has caused a lot of problems. Please let me know your new username when you've created it. Thanks, Archer7 - talk 11:20, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have created a new account under "Ionas68224". Although I don't mean to be uncivil, it is "controversial". I thought that everyone posted their opinions on their user page like that, and I also thought it was a bit uncivil of Tdxiang to do that. I do not see how my views are controversial, but I will continue to follow SEW's policies.

Ionas68224 22:20, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah yes, you're right on the spelling :). Tdxiang only blocked you because another very well-known vandal uses "communism" in usernames, and mistook it for you. It was not related to your views at all. Thanks, Archer7 - talk 22:39, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RfA question

I am thinking of requesting adminship sometime soon, and I have a question. Since I was inactive for a month after creating my account, should I wait until three months after April 26, when I started editing, or go ahead and do it three months from when I created my account (Today)? --Isis§(talk) 22:47, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Three months of editing would be best. The rules aren't fixed though, we're quite flexible at times. Archer7 - talk 22:50, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
So, I should wait? --Isis§(talk) 23:54, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Billz (Talk) 23:57, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Usurp

Hey all. I'm w:User:Alison from "over there". Quick question; can you guys do username usurp requests over here? The (obvious) one I want is taken but has been unused and unloved for a long time. Thanks - Ali-oops 22:48, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We don't have a specific place to handle username change/usurpation requests, but flagging down a bureaucrat won't be hard at all. (Their names are Archer7 and Blockinblox). If any of the bureaucrats are reading this, a usurpation is performed by renaming the target username to something else (like username (usurped)), and renaming the original username as the target. Sean William 22:51, 30 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, Sean. I just dragged over the usurp template and added it, just in case it's needed again. Let's see if I can paste a request here;

Alison ← Ali-oops

Note:
  •  The target username meets the requirements for usurpation.
  • The current owner of the target username has been notified of this usurpation request.
  • The current owner of the target username has an email set, and an email has been sent by a clerk or bureaucrat to notify them of this request.
  •  Clerk note: The current username is over 6 months old - Ali-oops 11:17, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • That worked! I uploaded all the CHU/U templates to make this easy for other people. I did my own clerking here (en.wp admin - did it before) and everything seems fine - Ali-oops 11:17, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Two things

The header for this page isn't working correctly (it says this is an archive, which it's not). Also, MediaWiki:Noarticletext should link to SEWT, not EWT. Thanks! --Cromwellt|talk|contribs 01:35, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Changed the link to SE Wiktionary, but I think it might be an idea to change SEWikt's Noarticletext to link to the English Wiktionary if possible. I don't quite understand about the header for this page, are you sure you're not getting confused with the links to the archives of this page? Archer7 - talk 10:38, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
When he wrote it, it was wrong. I've looked into it and have fixed the problem so that they now say the correct thing. I created a separate archive header and then changed the wording on the noticeboard header. I think the header was originally intended to recognize which page it was on and change the text accordingly, but for some reason it wasn't working. I don't think my fix is the perfect way to do it, but at least the pages say the correct message at the top now. · Tygartl1·talk· 13:38, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User:MAHOO! JAPAN!

Regarding the recent edits made by User:MAHOO! JAPAN!, and his messages in Japanese, I asked a Japanese Wikipedia administrator for help, over their IRC channel. Based on her translations, MAHOO! JAPAN!'s posts didn't contain obscene words, and he/she has requested in several occasions from us, to stop writing to him/her in English. I suppose he/she has also blamed me (here) about not knowing Japanese; to be frank he/she is right!

Anyways, I asked the Ja WP admin to leave a message on MAHOO! JAPAN!'s talk page in Japanese, telling him/her what we already said. This way, I thought the user will surely understand the message.

By the way, I'm suspecious that User:MINIKETSU is a sockpuppet for the same user, but I try to keep this as a weak suspect. Meanwhile, MINIKETSU's edit history shows this account has not been used to get around the block to MAHOO! JAPAN! account (the block started on 07:00, 27 July 2007 UTC, while the last edit made by MINIKETSU is on 06:59, 27 July 2007 UTC). So in lack of any abuse history, I see no reason to take any action against this account.

Hope I've helped, - Huji reply 10:09, 28 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
